Fan-made Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined 2D Beat 'Em Up has a playable demo

gflol.PNG

Fans have created a 2D side scrolling beat 'em up version of Final Fantasy VII. There is a playable level over at the official site.

Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined is a project made by fans of the original game. We re-imagined how the game would be like if it's an action game. Classic 2D Side-scrollers, such as Dragons and Dungeons: Chronicles of Mystara, Streets of Rage, etc, came to our minds. We thought about how we can incorporate some of the FFVII game play elements, such as Materia and summoning of Guardian Force into a Hack and Slash genre. The result is what you can see above.

Yea, even though you can enable the NPAPI flag, and I've done this before, Google said themselves that they're going to just trash it completely from Chrome pretty soon. That's a big deal because SO many sites still depend on it. They can't just remove something that important because it's considered "legacy". Other browsers are keeping it for compatibility reasons. I'm literally on Firefox now and I had just uninstalled Chrome.
I'm just gonna avoid updates that are going to remove unity lol

And the site is slow as fuck. Still loading the unity script :(

If you scroll down, you can download the demo yourself using a torrent client. Much faster since there seems to be a lot of peers, I downloaded it at nearly 2MB/s that way.

Thank fucking god the website finally loaded cause no one was willing to share it. Bunch of selfish people.

sorry I annoyed you with my sleeping

Do any of you have something positive to say? Why must Gbatemp users always go straight to "oh probs going to get a c&d no point" whenever a fanmade project comes about, by that logic then whats the point in eating if you're going to starve anyway. Stop actling like nihilists and enjoy whatever fanmade work people make (unless its bad then you can point at it and laugh).
It's not just GBA temp everybody and their mother's first thoughs are "I wonder when this is getting C&D"

Greedy people don't work on logic, they work on crushing the remote possibility that other people could take what they view as rightfully theirs. If there's even the slightest chance that this demo might one day make a single dollar instead of Square Enix making that dollar, then they'll rip its throat out.

I just want to say that a lot of times projects like these get c&d'd its not always about greed, it's about protecting copyright, if they let a project like this happen, it can put their hold over the copyright licences for ff7 into question.

Also you can call it greed all You want, but it's really just business, it always has been, greed means your company is in profit not debt, and that's not always a bad thing.

But most of the time Projects get C&D on franchises that are dead for years. Instead of doing that how about pulling a capcom?

And they protect those copyrights because...oh yeah, money. Look, I get that companies want to make profits. Fair play to them. But if Square Enix were never going to make this particular product which is clearly in demand, if someone else is willing to do so then they should be allowed to. It's called competition, and it keeps companies on their toes. Personally I think copyright should protect the exact item itself, not the concepts behind it. So we can't go around claiming we made FF7 itself, nor the upcoming remake. But things just based on them should be fine. I'm sure you'd get a tidal wave of knock-offs like the Atari days but with instantaneous feedback and the much higher standards of gamers these days, only the best would survive. In the long run it would lead to the creation of truly incredible games instead of us just having to accept whatever we're given because there's no other choice.

Example, what if a company came along that did all the same kind of games EA made, only properly and without treating the audience with absolute giggling contempt? We'd love it, but EA can shut it down through use of cppyright claims, and thus we're stuck with the ass holes.

The way copyright works in the states, you have to be very diligent about your assets. If you allow someone in one instance to use your intellectual property (IP), then other folks can use that instance as a legal reason to justify other unlicensed uses of that intellectual property. It's a bag of dumb, but it's how the US system works.

Don't protect your stuff, and King will come along and sue you for using an intellectual property they stole from you. Again, one big ball of dumb.

SQE might let this slide but Idk it's games like these that attract an audience that loves this series. we all know how big FFVII was/is and with a PS4 remake coming they may C&D this project it wouldn't surprise me.

**offtopic**
I'm still happy to see mother 4 being made.
can't wait for the release

Projects that make it and don't get C&D I'm so thankful for.

FFVII type 0 -PsP
Mother 3
Mother 4 (hopefully fin soon)
etc..etc...

It's monetary greed, it always is. They don't want anyone else making money off this idea in case they decide to do it themselves. Even if they never do, they'd rather have it in their back pocket than in someone else's.

It's their IP, you don't have the right to use it without their permission.

It's not greed to want other people not to steal your work.

How would you feel if you made a game, and someone else came along and just copy+pasted the characters from your game into theirs and called it theirs?

If someone was to make FF7 or any other protected IP verbatim, copying literally every pixel and claiming it as their own work, then yes, that's theft and should be punished. But consider this; everything is based on something. All those fantasy games with elves and dwarves and orcs, do they need to be shut down because Lord of the Rings did it first? Any video game that uses a gun should be shut down because Wolfenstien did it first, right? Hell, my avatar should be banned because I don't own the rights to Pikachu, even an evil one, even though I painted that picture myself.

See what I'm getting at? There's a huge difference between copying something and basing your work around something. This game clearly isn't FF7 itself, it's a reimagining of the story through a different style. Ergo it's something different. I believe copyright shoudl protect the exact work, not anything that might be a little bit like it, because once we get into that second mentality where nothing can ever be like anything else, then we'll be left with basically nothing. It's said that there are only seven stories in the world, they're just told through different eyes. When you really think about it pretty much every beloved franchise is building on the foundation of that which came before. You think Star Wars is an entirely original concept? Indiana Jones? Nothing is truly original any more. And companies need to stop weilding copyright law like a banhammer to make sure nobody can ever make money with something close to original thought.

This game looks like something I'd happily pay full price for. If Square Enix actually listened to their customers and realized we're excited about this instead of just making what they think is cool and shoving it down our throats (IE: Lightning Returns) then maybe they could compromise and see this project made truly fantastic, but they'd have to share the profits with the creators and in today's greedy bloated industry it's an all or nothing game. If they can't make all the money for themselves then nobody can have any. It's a childish way to run things. Say this game makes, say, $10M profit. Square Enix makes a good 60% of that, minimum. But they don't see the $6M in their accounts, they see the $4M that isn't. They see the loss but not the gain. And when they'd be getting $6M for doing basically nothing and still complaining about it, you'll forgive me for not having any sympathy for the greedy short-sighted fuckwits.

The other day I tried playing the game on Windows 10 but it gave some incompatible reason, although I did try to make it compat with 7/8 also and didn't work. So what's the problem?
