More MicroNinja News

Price and new features

screens.jpg

Just 10 days ago we introduced the Microninja, a new slot-1 solution using removable microSD media. Today we have interesting news concerning its release, features and pricing.

• The price of the Microninja will be 60€. The NinjaDS price will then drop to 50€. (official)

• We at GBAtemp should receive our review units in about ten days.

• There should be no sticking-out, or at worse 0.5 cm if the manufacturers can't fix it completely.

• DS compatibility is being improved, most troublesome games should work on release day.

• Download play is a priority, they are definitely working on it and hope it'll be fixed on Microninja launch.

Many of these points we already knew. Now the most exciting part: we have new details about features that should satisfy the space-hungry and developpers.

• For developpers: "Ninjame".
The MicroNinja firmware - which I remind you is the same as the NinjaDS - will include a new feature called "Ninjame". The Ninjame is a special FTP server that runs on your DS. You can connect to it using any FTP client (from your PC, OSX, Linux... or even using the DS FTP homebrew client!), send a compiled .nds homebrew application and once the transfer is finished, the .nds will automatically be run on the DS. The speed should be around 100 kilobytes/s. An easy, fast, effective way to test your homebrew! I'd even add "cheap" since this feature will be on the NinjaDS too (50€).

• For the space-hungry: a wifi FTP server.
You can transfer any file from your computer using a FTP client. The files are stored on the MicroSD/SD card. This means you can manage the content of your card remotely. You could even send roms to the cart but the speed is unfortunately limited to 50 kbyte/s - should be improved in the future.

• For the large families: a "multisave" feature.

The Microninja will support up to 9 save slots for each game. Switching save slots will be as easy as pressing L/R. If you have 9 save slots for each game, it means 9 different dogs in Nintendogs, 27 different games in New Super Mario Bros, etc.

Here at GBAtemp we're very eager to review the Microninja, and if it lives up to its promises and to our expectations, it could very well be the "ultimate" slot-1 solution everyone's looking for.
Stay tuned!

the extra save space is worthless imo. woh the fuck needs to have 27 saves of NSMB? who needs more save space than what you already have for anygame as far as that goes.

the ftp client is cool, but capped at 50k is kinda weak when the download/play is 100k. anyone know what the dslite tops out at anyways?

the rest of it is pretty good shit. whats this going to cost american anyways? $90?

I think if you had only 1 DS for you and your brother (or sister) you would realize.

Oh well, you could still put the same rom twice on the cart, with different names, but then it's a big waste of space.

So if you have an ftp server on your computer, and you are sharing your roms, then you can connect your DS using the wifi?

Well, it sounds like something interesting, but impractical. Seriously, who here is going to wait 20 min to "download" a 64 meg game through wifi onto your DS from your computer? You could take 2 min and just take the micro sd card out and load it on manually.

Fact is, my laptop is not always with me and most people with a ds lite that's younger definitely don't own a personal laptop....so if you're oh let's say in another country and you need to play a game you got @ home, nothing impractical about downloading the rom while you have a cigarette and come back to play your game. Point is this opens doors to to ability to get games @ any access point. To me that's a nice plus.

Agreed. I cannot bring a computer into work, but I can play my DS for the entire shift. Being able to access an FTP from anywhere would be great in this regard, and I'd never have to worry about running out of space, but the SD capability will allow me to take commonly used items, while if I ever am in the mood for a different game/movie/mp3 then I'll have it handy.

I just dislike the OS of the MicroNinja. I haven't done any research but I hope I can kill that "NES" font.

About the FTP server... how can they up the speed from 50 kb/s when, IIRC, the type of WiFi that the DS uses is capped at around 50 kb/s?

Deathspawn, earlier in this thread, said the DS uses 100k/s for download play, though I might have mis-interpreted that one. I don't think the maximum speed the DS is capable of is exactly known. I've seen rough estimates around 2 mbps (that's megabits), but I haven't seen an official spec sheet about it from Nintendo. Can anyone supply?

From Nintendo's official specs page (http://www.nintendo.com/techspecds)...

Wireless Communication: IEEE 802.11 and Nintendo's proprietary format; wireless range is 30 to 100 feet, depending on circumstances; multiple users can play multiplayer games using just one DS game card

This does not specify 802.11a, b, or g. However, as far as I know, the DS is only compatibly with B networks. If that's the case, I don't see why speeds of 11 mB/s can't be obtained.

Uhh, there's a big difference between flush and sticking out .5cm.

Exactly what I was talking about. I knew they confirmed it was 802.11, and that it was compatible with B (and G routers), but they've never divulged the actual speed it uses. My guess is that it's somewhere close to B's speeds, but I doubt it is capable of the full 11 mbps (not megabytes as you mentioned). That would suck the power out of the battery like crazy if that was the case.

Not really...... 1/2 cm is very minuscule - I doubt it would obstruct the fingers at all.

I'm not sure it's possible to do better than 2Mbit/s, that seems to be what all the dev sites list the top speed at. Aside from saving battery life, I don't know why this limit exists. Anyone?
