There are some games I'd like to buy from the nintendo e-shop. I haven't updated my 3ds xl or even connected it to the internet since I got it. I'm wondering: if I buy some games in the e-shop will the 3ds update automatically and prevent me from using my r4 card in the future, or can I safely suppress updates?
You'll have to update your 3DS's firmware eventually. Newer games only work when you install the newer firmware. You should do what Rydian suggested
