Ok... I have to start by saying Brett from Nintendo DS suppport ROCKS! He has my vote for employee of the year.
here's the story: (not of a man named brady)
I have an ice blue Nintendo DS lite that I got from ebay about two months ago. The top screen started to fail where it would flicker a bit. After a while I had to open the DS lite to the second click so that it's fully open in order to get a clear picture. Last week the top screen just turned completely white and I'm unable to get video at all. After calling the Nintendo support hotline they said that since I don't have a US release it is not covered by warranty and I would need to pay the $75 USD and shipping costs to get it repaired.
At this point I almost thought to get a US release one instead of paying the $75 and not having a warranty on it for the rest of the year.
Solution:
Today I called back to get the DS lite fixed after deciding to pay for the repair. When I spoke to the support line I got Brett. After explaining my situation and telling him that I wanted to get it fixed he put me on hold to speak to his manager. After a minute wait he came back and said that they would repair it under a "limited edition release in the US" ds lite. Covered under warranty!!!
I was in utter shock. On top of that Brett said that they would even put a US serial number on it so if I have the problem again it would be covered.
(tears of joy)
Lesson for today is sometimes you get a really nice guy on the other end of the line that really goes out of his way to help you out. Brett gets my vote for employee of the year!
BTW: side note... he said that this problem occurs on about 1/2 to 1% of all DS lites. The connector for the top part of the video gets loose and it just needs to be reseated. (That's exactly what I thought it was but I don't have a Y shaped screwdriver and didn't want to strip the screws.) All in all a great experience. I knew Nintendo support was good but I'm pretty shocked.
Thanks Brett!
