Mini FAQ:
1) Can my flashcart run DS games on my 3DS?
Yes
2) Can any current flashcart run DS games on my 3DS?
As of now, it looks like only any reflashable flashcart that works on the DSi will be able to. The R4 DS team have confirmed their card works on the 3DS in DS mode and other teams are sure to follow suit.
3) Can my flashcart run DSi games on my 3DS?
That remains to be seen.
4) Can my flashcart run 3DS games on my 3DS?
This is the real challenge. 3DS games haven't even been dumped yet. And this probably won't happen for a long time. And it will most probably require a new generation of flashcarts. But don't quote me on that!

They are NOT the R4 team!!
They are a group of people using the R4 name to sell their clone cards.

As for #3, highly doubtful, give that there is only one card that runs in DSi mode and that is the iEvolution by Team Cyclops.
If it's updateable (I would have to guess that it would be), then it's POSSIBLE for them to do something similar to what older 'DSi' cards did.
But if your card doesn't run in DSi mode on a DSi, there is absolutely ZERO reason it would run in DSi mode on a 3DS.

I really don't see why everybody assumes a flashcart means the instant death of the 3DS. It certainly hasn't hurt the Wii or DS any, and both of those had them pretty early on. The companies always say they have "lost" x$ to piracy. While it is true they lose something to piracy, it's nowhere near the x$. Let's say that piracy never existed and game A comes out. You have no intention of buying game A. Now, lets go back to piracy existing and you download the game for whatever reason you wouldn't have bought in the first place. There is no lost sale there. Or to put it another way - say you hate tomatoes. If the price of tomatoes goes down to 1 cent/lb, you're not magically going to buy more tomatoes. If there was a way pirate vegetables, you wouldn't be causing lost sales of tomatoes.

Now, are there some games people get for free that they would have bought? Yes, of course. But what we tend to forget here is that gbatemp/"the scene" is a rather insular community. A lot of "regular" people have no clue that you can use flashcards or modchips or whatnot, and are totally amazed when somebody tells them that they can. Without a doubt, the majority of DSes, Wiis, or any other system are unmodded. Which is why the true loss of y$ is always less then the stated loss of x$.

Now, all of this being said, it doesn't matter to me personally if a 3DS mode cart ever happens, even though it's naive to think it won't. It will be nice to have a DS mode cart if nothing else so I can get rid of my lite and still have my emus and what not.

Everyone, please keep a few things in mind.

Nintendo stated that The Piracy Measures on the 3DS Would be so advanced that no one would ever break them

The 3DS has already been "hacked" to play DS games, within 12 hours of first release

The forced updates are being added in a later update, and won't be included at the international launch of the 3DS.

..And If you leave off WiFi, they can't update your system

That's definitely something to celebrate about, and should definitely help the sales of the 3DS.

For some reason people keep comparing the 3ds to the dsi. There was no real motivation to hack the dsi. With the 3ds being the next big handheld more flashcart teams are going to try and get their cart to work with the 3ds(actually being able to play 3ds games).

R4i DSN = R4 Ultra clone (Acekard) running Wood.
Oh wow Mr. Obvious, I never knew.

Might as well buy one.

Better buy an Acekard. It's more fun than another fake R4.
Or an SCDS2, but neither work with the 3DS... Yet.

Now I just wonder who will be the first to crack 3DS mode.

Well. I for one did not know this. I thought that was the R4i Gold.COM team.

That's right. Both cards (Gold CN & DSN) are from the same team and R4 Ultra / Acekard clones.

Better buy the real thing.

So what? Nintendo probably expected DS-mode flashcarts to work. 3DS mode is a whole other monster.

eh, they might have shown their hand too early. if i was a hacker, i'd wait until the 3DS has been released world wide. Nintendo can easily fix this with an update. they can pull a "you need to update in order to use the shop channel or the internet" and with no ways of getting around this yet, most people will have to update if they want to use the internet or shop.

on the plus side its cool?... they got DS games working, i just wonder about 3DS games. but i will just play DS games on my DS.

All this is doing is making the 3DS think that it's a real DS cart, just like they did with the DSi. This is nothing new.

Companies typically don't care much for console sales*, because they lose money**.
*Obviously they're going to want more system sales, but they're more interested in title attachment (how many titles you buy with the system).
**Nintendo is the only company to sell their consoles for a profit.

The problem is fitting those humongous 3ds games into a tiny microsd card
This is DS mode. Not 3DS mode.

I sincerely hope no flashcart team gets something running. I want firmware exploits dammit. But with that pesky auto-update being a bitch it'll be hard to hold onto any exploit for any amount of time.
