Yeah, our government has such a great track record of protecting our identity, just look at how safe and secure SSN's are, nobody EVER gets those stolen and used for identity theft.

Dude, we HAVE NO future as far as those asshats on capitol hill are concerned.
All they seem to do is sit on their asses all day, coming up with new shit to shove down our throats to make our lives more miserable.

Welcome to the United States of North America Korea.
Also, we're confiscating your Google and icanhascheezburger. No can has lulz.

Wow. I love this nation, but sometimes think our government thinks they can become as powerful as they want. This would be a violation of my constitutional rights (right to privacy), and if they put out a referendum, I'd like to see 1 person vote in favor of this "U.S. Internet ID system". It wouldn't ever get signed into law, and even if it did there would be PLENTY of alternatives to skip this crap. The internet is free enterprise. If our government can't understand that, then I worry about them. I hadn't heard about this until now, so I wouldn't worry about any of this. We need more Democracy and need to stop the Socialistic bull that is going on right now. I honestly kind of laughed when I read the title, but it kind of scared me as well. Oh well, I'd say don't worry about it. :/

EDIT: And the sad thing of it is... They are probably saying this because of all the WikiLeaks stuff that happened in the past few weeks. You don't solve a problem by creating another.

Maybe not as strict as North Korea, but it's true that the fact they're even thinking about such a system shows that they want to limit and/or monitor how we get our information.

I'm seriously considering emigrating to another country, not just because of this, but all the other BS things this government has been doing. My taxes are going to waste here

OHNOZ! MANDATED OPENID! GET UR HYPERBOLES OUT GAIZ!

I hate it when people do that. The government CONSIDERING starting a program that creates an internet ID for its citizens (for all we know, it is only for Government websites, yeah?) does NOT in any shape, way, or form make it a totalitarian dictatorship.

Get your head out of your ass.

openID already exists.
This is just a method to catch and prosecute pirates thought up and paid for by MPAA and Sony.

This. It may be a fucking retarded idea, but it's only being CONSIDERED at this point. No reason to jump to conclusions, and invasion of privacy? lol, ok. Seems like a lot of you didn't even read the article.

This sounds almost as bad as the piracy monitoring crap they were trying to introduce in New Zealand. Thankfully, they managed to find a few nerds with brains in this country who came out of the woodwork to tell them "no shitheads, that's a BAD IDEA", and so the government let their new initiative die, to never see the light of day.

Now it's the US's turn. Man, all I see are endless security issues - almost as problematic as cloud computing could be (if you like clouds, that's fine, but I'd rather look after my data on my own, thanks).

All I can say is this: good luck. I honestly doubt they'll be able to get way with pulling it off, but if they do.... Shame.

This is scary. It's time for people to rise up and show these filthy scumbags the door.

Republicans, democrats (i.e. necons, progressives), they're all the same. These power hungry assholes will get a reality check when they're out of office, out of power, and out of second chances.

Look this is all about speculations, the government won't endanger the citizens personal information in this time and age. It's stupid but knowing how the government operates, its redundant!

Yes, the government would never do anything to harm its own people.

It has nothing to do about harming their own people, they just know that if it were to be passed, and there was an exploit to get people's personal info, there would be a revolution on their hands. The government likes placidity, and that would most definitely create some waves.

Ever heard of Eugenics, if not start researching now, the government has harmed us before in the past. There's been other insane US government research in the past too that affected people in other countries as well.
