Awww...crap...why did they do this to Sam? I was really, really hoping that this would turn out as a side-scroller or even a 2,5D isometric shooter but no...when the developers start to notice that FPS really isn`t the best type of game for gba? Dang...!

FPS just doesn't work on the GBA. The action just isn't fast enough and there's no accuracy. Serious Sam was a classic though and funny. First time Sam meets those bomber guys he goes "'Aaaaaaaahh!' Yourself!" after you kill them all. Then hundreds of them starts coming at you... "Uh-oh."

Downloaded, Played, Reviewed:

Gameplay: like SS on pc you just get mass of monstres jumping at you in an endless stream and you do mostyl only one thing: keep down the trigger. in fact the game has not more to give than running around and getting a soar finger from pressing the A button. it reminds me on the one day my university pal showed me doom I in nightmare mode on his laptop
happy.gif
. you see quickly where the game aims and then you have also seen it already.
Graphics: an fps usually means pixelate graphics and although some manage to do this fair well SSA just sux plainly there. the graphics are really pixelating and FPS is slow. it definitly was not a good choice to do it 3d and the laking controls don't help it neither.
Music: not the worst i've seen yet but also not blistering. it's at least not annoying so you won't put it off that soon. otherwise nothing special here to see.
Controls: a sore part. turning around is way to fast and aiming at a particular point is a nightmare to tell it friendly. if the game would have a decent auto-aiming it could be ok but like this it's just like trying to walk on a road line after having drunk heavily. if you wanna hit something take this simple advice: don't aim. just look in the general direction and use the shoulder buttons to strafe until your target is locked. strafing is more accurate and the only way to clear rooms and aim at something somewhat easy.
VBA: you'll love it. you can get past the password crap easy with save states. although i never really used them in a hard game mode this could be the only way to get past difficult locations. speed up is of course not a topic here and i've not tested it. otherwise no issues with VBA.

Overall: a poor game compared to other FPS on the gba and surely one worth of the 'golden-ass-with-ears' price. unless you really have nothing better to do i would stay away from it. stick ot the other FPS on gba which are better than this.

Score:

*REVIEWING AS I AM PLAYING*

Just started the game and I think it's good that they added a level difficulty option. I've started the game and I've just given up on reading the bloody story as the writing's scrolling down so quickly.
The directional pad control where you move, (so up would mean walking forwards and right would mean turning round clockwise) A is to attack and B is to change weapons. R and L shimmy yourself left and right, handy for combat. Although this game looks rubbish it does seem slightly clearer and smoother than that of other FTP's *cough*doom*cough* The controls are well laid out but are... rubbish when it comes to using them. It's extremely har aiming your pistol at the baddies and well you're dead meat when surrounded by many of those thing with a chainsaw which is like a blunt knife. It takes at least five stabs just to kill one monster. God I don't know why there was so much anticipation over this crap.

1.5/5

(I gave it half a mark for graphics)

It's a decent game, but it was really an unnecessary port. The control scheme works well. The graphics aren't all that detailed, save a few monsters and hieroglyphics. The sound strives for greatness and meets mediocrity. The password save could have been done away with.

The whole point of Serious Sam games is to be ambushed and overwhelmed by enemies and shoot your way out, but the GBA doesn't have the kind of power to push the polygons required to do it.

For some reason this game reminds me of an old PC shooter:Â Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold.

I give it a 5.5/10.
blake stone? oh yes blake stone : aliens of gold is a cool game

and ssa is a ok game

I give it a 6.5/10

looks like they wasted all of the GBAs polygon power on that chainsaw! the chainsaw looks good though!
Hate to piss on your fire Garp and Noberto but the chainsaw is made up from sprites, not polygons.
rolleyes.gif

...The only way the "detailedness" of the chainsaw would affect the 3D engine is probably give the GBA less space in the ram for texures and stuff, but how good the textures are will mostly depend on how good the 3D engine is anyway and it's capabilities.

Anyway I really wish this had been a side scrolling shooter aka. Metal Slug, or as someone else said a top down shooter...for that I was thinking of Shock Troopers... FPS games on the GBA really suck in all honesty.

your not pissing on my FIRE

I know its sprites used for the chainsaw, If it was made of polygons it would look like a BOX with a smaller long BOX attatched to it for the BLADE!
biggrin.gif
either way, thats a badass looking chainsaw! Maybe along with the worst FPS on GBA award, SSA should get the BEST CHAINSAW in GBA GAME AWARD!

Lol, hell yeah polygon based weapons would indeed be interesting...

Oooh on the topic of shooters anyone remember Pefect Dark on the GBC? Great graphics (including loads of blood!), stacks of digitised speech and good music, built in rumble pack, multiplayer modes via linkup, GB Pack combatible with Perfect Dark on the N64, plus a load of unlockables. It was kind of like an amazing version of Metal Gear on the NES with a bit of first person stuff and other things included. Dam why on earth did I sell the cart after I completed it?! I really want to play that again now...best handheld shooter ever.

This game is terrible! The frame rate and controls are just really poor.

If you want a good FPS experience on your GBA then I definitely recommend Ice Nine. I just got around to completing it and it was great! Although the ending was quite disapointing...
