Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled gets native Switch port

Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled gets native Switch port

@Trinalord777 has released DK64Recomp-NX, a Switch port of Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled - a PC static recompilation of Donkey Kong 64.

Like the PC version, the game is recompiled to native code but instead of Vulkan the Switch build uses GLideN64 on OpenGL instead. It runs as homebrew from the Homebrew Menu and as usual you will need to supply your own compatible ROM as no copyrighted assets are included.

What works
  • The whole game, from boot to gameplay, with saves
  • 30 fps (the original frame rate) at 960x720
  • 16:9 widescreen with the HUD at the screen edges
  • Clean 48 kHz audio
  • 60 fps: Frame Rate from 30 to 60, with two modes:
    - Interpolated (default, recommended): the game keeps its 30 steps per second and an in-between frame is drawn
    - Note: The game should run smoothly but it happens frequently the game may feels more slow due to buffering on the framerate; I am currently working to apply a more stable solution; In the meantime I recommend setting FPS to 50

60 fps is available through frame interpolation, and the port also features an in-game options menu and support for mods from the PC version. Version 1.1.2 has just released with frame rate improvements and an experimental 1080p option.

The installation steps, full changelogs, known issues and download links are in the thread below!

⚠️ Ported with the help of Claude (Anthropic), tested on real hardware.

Hey everyone!

Here is the first release of DK64Recomp-NX, a Nintendo Switch port of Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled (the PC version).

The game is statically recompiled to native code, like the PC version. The PC renderer (RT64) needs Vulkan, so the Switch build uses GLideN64 on OpenGL instead.

What works
  • The whole game, from boot to gameplay, with saves
  • 30 fps (the original frame rate) at 960x720
  • 16:9 widescreen with the HUD at the screen edges
  • Clean 48 kHz audio
Tested on HOS 22.0.0 with Atmosphère.

Installation
You need your own Donkey Kong 64 (USA) dump. No ROM or game assets are included.
  1. Unzip the release onto the root of your SD card.
  2. Put your ROM in the same folder as the .nro (any file name works).
  3. Hold R while starting any game, then pick DK64: Recompiled in the Homebrew Menu.
Code:
sdmc:/switch/dk64recomp/
├── dk64recomp.nro
└── Donkey Kong 64 (USA).z64

Still a work in progress
  • Mod support (.nrm mods from the PC version) is being worked on
  • An in-game settings menu is planned; for now the settings are fixed

Found a bug?
Post it here with what you were doing and the log file: sdmc:/switch/dk64recomp/dk64recomp.log

It runs really well. Had a couple textures unload, and a black screen, but no issues after a relaunch

Looking forward to Tag Anywhere so I can finally beat the game before I get fed up.

So cool!
I'm actively working on it! Good thing is mods are now compatible via an implemented-in-game extended menu (here below Tag Anywhere in use).
FPS might get attainable soon relative to tweaks on GLideN64, will soon update the repo with these modifications.

This will make the game so much better, looking forward to try it!

UPDATE V 1.1.1 => Enhanced Graphics/60 FPS Interpolation + Mod implementation + cheats

Thanks for all the feedback, most of this update comes from your requests!
Find the new release here (tag-anywhere mod included);
=> https://github.com/Trinalord777/DK64Recomp-NX/releases/latest

What's new

* 60 fps: Frame Rate from 30 to 60, with two modes:
- Interpolated (default, recommended): the game keeps its 30 steps per second and an in-between frame is drawn
- Note: The game should run smoothly but it happens frequently the game may feels more slow due to buffering on the framerate; I am currently working to apply a more stable solution; In the meantime I recommend setting FPS to 50

- True (experimental): the game runs at 60, but many animations, enemies and timers run too fast. I won't recommend to implement it at the moment but feel free to use it

* NX Options: press - and + together in game. Settings, Enhancements and Dev Tools tabs, saved to nx_options.txt

* Face Buttons option: swap A and B

* Mods: .nrm mods from the PC version, each one with its on/off switch and its options in the menu
* Tag Anywhere + Sparkles included: switch Kong from (almost) anywhere with D-Pad Left/Right. Turn on "Tag Anywhere Sparkles" in Enhancements > Mods, then Restart Game

* GameShark cheats grouped by Kong, with a corrected cheats.cht (the usual libretro file empties your melons on save)

* Overlays: FPS counter, performance overlay, input viewer, gameplay timer
* Clock Profile: CPU Boost (1785 MHz) for steadier 60 fps, needs Horizon OC
* Texture filter (Standard or N64 3-point), volumes, Quit Game and Restart Game buttons

* Dev Tools: warps, inventory, unlocks, map and position overlay

Code:

sdmc:/switch/dk64recomp/
├── dk64recomp.nro
├── cheats.cht
├── mods/ (Tag Anywhere + Sparkles)
└── Donkey Kong 64 (USA).z64

Some know issues:

* Short hitches the first time a room is seen (its textures load), more noticeable at 60 fps at stock CPU clock
* About 10 s of black screen at launch before the Nintendo logo: that's normal, just wait
* True 60 fps mode runs the game too fast, use Interpolated; may causes other glitches

Hope you all have a nice time!

Thanks! With tag anywhere and analog camera, I'm excited to keep playing!

I am having one big issue though. The longer I play, the more textures disappear. I have to stop playing and restart the game periodically because eventually the game is just a black void of unloaded textures. For reference, I'm playing docked at stock clocks, FPS set to 40.

I've also got a few feature requests, in order from most to least reasonable.
1. I'd like to map A to B, and B to Y, to match the original N64 button layout.
2. It would also be great to be able to map the first-person camera to X (or any button) so I can use the analog camera without triggering first-person mode.
3. Right sick for first-person aiming.
4. Invert analog camera
5. Motion controls for first-person aiming. 😋
6. It would be really nice to boot straight to the Main Menu. (There's a mod for this, but it seems to break the widescreen...)

Thanks for your work. Aside from the texture issues, it's already so much better than playing the original.

Such a greate port !! thank you so much!!! Could you please add an option to change the in-game resolution up to 1080p (1920x1080)?

Hey! Glad people are enjoying the port :hrth:

I'll start working on all of these now; right now though I will focus on the void textures as this is by far the most concerning issues.
Could you please share some screenshots of the glitch? That might help to better understand the situation, thanks!

EDIT: Found it; will start to tackle it more in-depth

DIT 2: V 1.1.2 is out; void textures should be resolved by now, 60 fps Interpolated is smoother while running (fewer dropped in-between frames), and there's an experimental 1080p option

This is really cool! Is the DK64 that comes with the N64 collection from the official store stuck at 30 fps?

It's actually a port of the DK64 recompilation project done on PC; you can find more information on the original project on this repo: https://github.com/Rainchus/Donkey-Kong-64-Recompiled (and here is their official website: https://dk64recomp.com/).
Therefore the game can run at more than 30 fps.

This project wouldn't have happened without the efforts of the developers behind the original; all credit goes to them.

In the meantime, I'll focus on adding the new options and recommendations seen in the thread. The idea is to make a port that matches the PC recomp as closely as possible.

Thank you everyone for all the positive feedback on this thread, will keep upgrading the project
