Anbernic shows off new handheld with Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset

Anbernic has shown off the RG DDS, a new dual-screen Android handheld that looks suspiciously similar to a certain Nintendo handheld. It's being dubbed as their "flagship dual-screen handheld console" and is an evolution of last years RG DS and the RG DS Plus that arrived last month and ...*checks email* in breaking news has now been superseded by the RG DDS ++ model (kidding).

Powering it is Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, the same octa-core chipset used in the Retroid Pocket G2. Notebookcheck reckons that should put it ahead of the AYN Thor, which runs on the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

The screens are where Anbernic has delivered. It describes them as two "customised" IPS panels: a 4.7-inch display on top and a 4-inch one below. Despite the size difference, both run at 720p with a 300 PPI pixel density and reach 500 nits, which Anbernic says makes for a seamless dual-screen experience. That resolution is also why the RG DDS is said to handle 3DS games at a perfect 3x integer scale.

  • Custom IPS Dual Screens with Perfect Aspect Ratio — Seamless, immersive, and visually stunning.
  • Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 — Total control, unmatched performance.
  • Built-in Retractable Stylus — Precision at your fingertips.
  • Ergonomics, Controls & Software — Every single detail redesigned from the ground up for the ultimate dual-screen experience.
  • RG DDS — Dream Dual-Screen.
  • The dual-screen handheld we’ve always dreamed of, and hopefully, the one you’ve been waiting for.

It will be available in black, white and blue. Unfotunately, Anbernic has not announced pricing or a release date yet.

Might be cheaper to just repair it?
I've had just about every iteration of 3D's system. NONE have been successfully repairable.

Even just replacing the stock battery somehow broke off the volume slider on this unit. If not for the software controls in Rosalina and the nds bootstrap respectively, I wouldn't be able to adjust the volume anymore.

What should have been a simple re-shelling of an n3ds xl had me in a mental breakdown because it was five different PCBs layered in a mash of proprietary connectors and ribbon cables just for the main portion. The shoulder buttons themselves were also a mix of ribbon cable and PCB mingled with the plastic frame, each.

It makes me want to personally wring miyamoto's neck till his head pops off for the sheer trauma of such a repair hostile design.

I'm surprised (but glad) that Nintendo hasn't threatened litigation with how close in appearance this is to a New 3DS XL.

Betting most users will rebind the dedicated AI button to do something else. Maybe if you refer to walkthroughs a lot, it's useful, but I can't imagine wanting it on a handheld.

I have some odd questions. Do we know what analog sticks they're using and what the response curve is?

If this is running Android then how is trying to run the device without Play Services? It's not

I can attest to that... I will have to do a repair following a failed repair, I hope that won't lead to a death spiral...

There is still no third-party dual-screen handheld with a 3D screen, otherwise I would be happy to take the 3DS's hardware-specific keys and pretend a look-alike is the real 3DS. Provided it's repairable too. I don't hold very high expectations in that front, either...

It's a tragedy. Great handheld with great games, designed to take outside and expected to take a beating over time, but not very resistant to anything. The clones are getting close, but the most important part, it's nowhere to be found. I guess, good for anyone who simply didn't care about that feature.

Thinking about it again, coping with the possibility that there will never be another dual-screen handheld with a 3D screen, I determined that the only alternatives are anaglyph glasses (the horrible red and blue glasses that destroy colour) and shutter glasses (rapidly blinding each eye to show alternating L/R frames). For the latter, however, I can find almost no information at all, so I doubt any kind of signalling would work, as it has to receive frame timing from the source in order to work at all.
