Anbernic shows off new handheld with Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset

Anbernic has shown off the RG DDS, a new dual-screen Android handheld that looks suspiciously similar to a certain Nintendo handheld. It's being dubbed as their "flagship dual-screen handheld console" and is an evolution of last years RG DS and the RG DS Plus that arrived last month and ...*checks email* in breaking news has now been superseded by the RG DDS ++ model (kidding).

Powering it is Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, the same octa-core chipset used in the Retroid Pocket G2. Notebookcheck reckons that should put it ahead of the AYN Thor, which runs on the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

The screens are where Anbernic has delivered. It describes them as two "customised" IPS panels: a 4.7-inch display on top and a 4-inch one below. Despite the size difference, both run at 720p with a 300 PPI pixel density and reach 500 nits, which Anbernic says makes for a seamless dual-screen experience. That resolution is also why the RG DDS is said to handle 3DS games at a perfect 3x integer scale.

  • Custom IPS Dual Screens with Perfect Aspect Ratio — Seamless, immersive, and visually stunning.
  • Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 — Total control, unmatched performance.
  • Built-in Retractable Stylus — Precision at your fingertips.
  • Ergonomics, Controls & Software — Every single detail redesigned from the ground up for the ultimate dual-screen experience.
  • RG DDS — Dream Dual-Screen.
  • The dual-screen handheld we’ve always dreamed of, and hopefully, the one you’ve been waiting for.

It will be available in black, white and blue. Unfotunately, Anbernic has not announced pricing or a release date yet.

And soon the really good double dream duel screen aka the 3DS and the really good double dream duel screen eXtra long aka the Anbernic RG 3DS XL
They already have 2 dimensions by the looks of it. Notice how the one in the middle has smaller looking screens. It would make sense if it was overall smaller too, but who knows

Big sadge for a lack of 3D screen and stylus being capacitive one, but neither of those can really be replicated. I am one of those that really likes 3D effect on my N3DSLL. It's especially gorgeous in Triple Deluxe.

Definitely looks more impressive than what Retroid released a little while ago. If this came out at the same time as the Thor, but cost a bit less, it would be a great choice.

Now that the Thor has been out for almost a year, there's a good chance that a Thor 2 with the SD elite chip is around the corner with all the other bells and whistles that you'd expect like OLED.

Like others have said, I don't really understand all these SKUs. Anbernic have so many its hard to really know what the best one is, unless we're just going off price tag. The one I hear most about, and who I personally think brought Anbernic into the spotlight, is the Ayn Thor, and its how I learned about Anbernic. The Ayn Thor looks and seems awesome if you don't already have a New 3DS, but since I have one, its why I've never jumped at an Anbernic product.

EDIT: Fixing spelling of the company

Maybe a hot take but they release these so fast, it NEVER feels like the right time to try one because a better one is always like a month away, so I just never have.

That said, I wouldn't really even consider it unless they had stereoscopic 3D. There's no point playing 3DS games in 2D.

Did they ever release one with 3D display? From what I can see, they did not. That would be a huge improvement over the current lineup of consoles they have.
These companies usually get overstocked hardware in bulk and put them together into their devices to lower prices down. It would be difficult for them to get ahold of a 3d capable display outside of specialty ordering them, which would cost more overall.

No one has, and I won't consider getting one of these devices until they do. Playing the 3DS library without it is just a huge letdown.

I recommend "overclocking" a New 3DS/XL for all your 3DS needs and just getting a single-screen handheld for everything else.

Given the (obvious) references in its design, can this run 3/DS/i stuff well? Given my n2DS XL now has a dead R button, I am (unwillingly) in the market to consider it, given the insane markups on the remaining handhelds on the market.

It should do. chip is powerful enough to upscale to the screen resolution. On paper, Anbernic have made this a perfect 3DS replacement more so than the Thor because of the screens.

Only issues I can see is the lack of resistive touch screen but nothing has that other than the original hardware.
