I have an original 1.6 Xbox (halo edition)
softmodded, with UnleashX, I think the softmod method was called NSANE
I have determined that this is an older softmod comparatively, but not really an early early one for the xbox, I don't think.

Is there a best resource for a guide to swap in a bigger hdd without a chip?
something that gets into all the copying/unlocking/pairing without assuming i know some of it?

At the time I read you needed a chip to do so, but I don't know if that's true anymore

trying to figure this stuff out from all the old "the usual places" info out there is like trying to squish together several time capsules in several different languages and make sense of it

If I need a modchip than I'm not interested so if that hasn't changed then thats that i guess.

PS: and obviously if there's some simple way to like run a USB drive with the og XBOX instead of swapping, I'm unaware of that and would be interested in that instead, but I assume if possible thats not just like some easy plug n play adapter

thank you. should i just go with the fastest rpm IDE drive i can find in good shape, or use an adapter? the guide doesn't really pick a lane

if Im understanding this guide, because im not chipped, i just need the eeprom backup to lock new drive; i dont see a step about locking the drive, but i guess it must just be a prompt that occurs when doing the formatting?

is up to you what kind of drive you want to use, this guy is using a ssd. This is an outdated list of compatible drives

if you are using the pc fatxplorer has an option to lock the drive using the eeprom

when i was looking to upgrade my drive, i was gonna use chimp but that's not recommended anymore for some reason.

I've seen a couple of videos about how to upgrade the internal IDE drive to a SATA drive. I've seen that there's a list of SATA HDDs that are listed there but I couldn't find any SSDs that will work. Is there any that you can recommend? I believe that FatXplorer is the way to go nowadays but I'm not sure if a random SSD will work with it. I do have a bigger 3.5in SATA HDD that is listed as lockable, but I'd rather use SSD instead but I'm not sure if it's lockable or not.

Just a heads-up: You will need a USB adapter to lock the drive after setting it up with the HDD tools in FATXplorer. I just installed my 2TB Seagate (ST2000DM008) this way.

CRITICAL STEP FOR SOFTMODS: Before doing anything else, back up your EEPROM from your Xbox motherboard to your PC via FTP! If you don't save a copy of your EEPROM first, you risk completely losing access to the drive if it locks unexpectedly. Since this is a Seagate drive, FATXplorer's built-in software password recovery tools cannot unlock it without an EEPROM file (that feature only works natively on Western Digital drives). Once your EEPROM is safely saved, you can use configmagic on the Xbox to manage your keys.

On the bright side, if your system is hardmodded (chipped or TSOP-flashed), you don't need to worry about drive locking at all, as custom BIOS files completely skip the Xbox boot-up locking check.
Remember to copy all your data into the correct partitions (E, F, and G).

It took me days to get an adapter from AliExpress to circumvent the SEC 2 frozen error, but it was worth it. I highly recommend using XBMC4Gamers along with the Origins theme it offers fantastic customization.

(Note for the admins: I won't be sharing details on how to get free ROMs, as that goes against the TOS).

Keep in mind that FATXplorer offers a free trial before you have to pay. Just remember that you will need a SATA/IDE-to-USB adapter with an external power supply if you are using a 3.5-inch drive. This is necessary for when you are ready to lock your drive after copying over all your files.

Sata/IDE
USB Adapter i used

Yes SSDs are still lockable.

Thanks for confirmation! I've recently acquired an XBOX and I plan to softmod it and replace its internal disc drive with the SSD so just wanted to confirm whether SSD is an option or not. I have a spare 240GB Samsung EVO 870 and 960GB ADATA SU650 so I'll see which one will be more suitable for my needs.

I just swapped from a 250gb Real space 232 a samsung 750. It was not enough space for my repositories so i ended up getting a 7200rpm seagate barracuda STMOOOL8 something, it runs great and tons of space as it ran out fast as i like to stack up on games so i have plenty!
