Despite its age, the last SEGA main console to release back in the late 90s, the SEGA Dreamcast, is still seeing massive usage throughout fan community support in the form of homebrew and modding, and most recently, in the form of decompilation games being ported over to it.

The Dreamcast has long been discontinued, being the very last mainstream console that SEGA released back in 1998, with SEGA announcing just a few years later that it will no longer be a hardware developer and instead focus on software going forwards, leading to many exclusive SEGA titles and franchises going to previously known competitors' consoles, like the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube.

Since then, the Dreamcast has been receiving homebrew support throughout the decades, and it wasn't until the last past years that the homebrew support for Dreamcast has gotten to the point where games made entirely for different consoles are now being ported to run natively on the Dreamcast, thanks to decompilations becoming more and more common these days.

Some of the most recently ported titles to the SEGA Dreamcast thanks to decompilations are Wipeout, Doom 64, and without a doubt the most impressive ports technically being made where both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, brought over to the Dreamcast with a lot of optimizations being made to run on SEGA's last console.

Now, another title can be included in the library of decompiled titles ported over to the Dreamcast, with the most recent title being none other that one of the Nintendo 64's flagship game, Star Fox 64, made by jnmartin84, and being available right now on its own GitHub repository.

This Dreamcast port was based on the sf64 decompilation by sonicdcer, from which the PC port Starship was based on as well. One of the most notable features of this Dreamcast port is rumble support, which can be experience on real hardware thorugh the use of one of these devices:
  • Sega Jump / Puru Pack
  • Performance TremorPak
  • Nyko DC Hyper Pak
  • Retro Fighters Striker DC Wireless built-in
Additionally, the Dreamcast port supports saving thorugh the use of the Dreamcast's VMU, requiring only 3 blocks to save the EEPROM's data.
As with every other decompilation project or port of any officially released title, the Star Fox 64 Dreamcast port requires the user to provide their own ROM of Star Fox 64 in order to be able to compile a CDI image to play on real hardware. jnmartin84 also warns that running this port through a Dreamcast emulator is not supported, so there's no guarantee that the port might work with full compatibility on a Dreamcast emulator.

Wrong and wrong. The Saturn CAN handle this game indeed. (People who hate the Saturn always say that it's not even capable of good arcade ports when it actually is.)
You are just shit talking about the Saturn because you hate it. It was much more capable than what you think.

Of course the greatest (and graphically/technically most impressive) games were confined in Japan, there was that idiotic "five-star game" policy by Bernie Stolar that made most games not get released overseas.

I have dealt multiple times with console haters, and I replied to them in the same exact way every time.
One of the worst lies I've ever heard. You're not even worth my time.
I read these posts with the same energy as this Family Guy clip

One of the other things the Sega Saturn lacked was texture coordinates. Whatever texture was loaded for rendering was fully rendered onto the quads, from corner to corner. So features like environment/reflective mapping were impossible on it.

Is not like the PS1 was a marvel that made 3D easy, it had several limitations, what the PS1 had was being way cheaper so people had time to get used to the hardware quirks.

One great advantage the Saturn had was the ram expansion slot allowing for some quite great Arcade ports. And it did 2D really well.

There is also a Super Mario 64 port for the PS1 in progress, very exciting stuff coming for everything!
There's already one for the PS2. I'm not sure if there's been any updates, as when it came out it had missing textures and frequent bugs.

I can't even laugh anymore because of you.
Seek a psychiatrist. You’ve had multiple mods tell you to stop. Your special interest may be the SEGA Saturn but until you’re willing to boot up an IDE and get your hands dirty you’re only spouting fanboyisms

I really love how legendary the Sega Dreamcast is, it was officially discontinued, but it still lives on thanks to its fans.
Post automatically merged:

I don't hate it, and I wish I owned one tbh

The things I'm saying have nothing to do with personal feelings

If you want to go further into why people in the West who make these ports choose Dreamcast (other than the obvious)

The Dreamcast outsold the saturn in the US by a factor of 2.5 and in Europe by 1.6 (to say the least, the Saturn crashed and burned in the west)

Japan is the only major region where Saturn outsold the Dreamcast (by a factor or 2.3 - even outselling the n64)

Westerners just simply didn't buy the thing, and many of us probably never saw one in real life in the 1990s
When I was a kid I saw ads of Sega Saturn in a lot of places and I really wish I owned it, but my dad only got me a Famiclone which was better than nothing.

The game I remember the most being advertised was Dragon Ball Z: The Legend and it was really good! Never bothered with the PS1 port as it was inferior.

Ha. Brilliant.

So porting N64 games to DC is a thing now. It'd be nice to see some improved graphics to make the most of the increase in power. I guess texture packs and model patches will be available online so players can upgrade the ROMs themselves

I wouldn't of heard of this otherwise, thank you for posting. Super excited to see where future ports lead us. :creep:
