The good news is that there is something in place that, even very imperfect, gives us a baseline to start from. Open-Source things can get improved... though the amount of people still developing for the venerable handhelds can probably be counted on one hand. Maybe we can get @FluBBa deeply interested in the YM chip :D

I tested the new translation of Ys I on an older version of the emulator, I don't remember which one, and all of a sudden after leaving one of the buildings the colors just randomly got messed up

The Zoom feature is great; one of the games where you can now see the text clearly is Hedlide 3 - The Space Memories.

At this stage of the emulator's development, might it be possible to add support for
MSX-DOS 2, as well as increase the volume—primarily for SCC, SCC+, and MSX-MUSIC—and ensure that lyrics are displayed when playing a game with PSG sound?

What lyrics? There isn't anything like that in MSX games

@esv_83 - what do you mean by 'ensure that lyrics are displayed' ?

Unrelated: I've been all over Ys I (whatever (en) translation I got from Filehunter site) and can't seem to reproduce the color problem. It's Screen 5 which doesn't even have a translation layer beyond the normal palette mapping so that has me really worried.

I don't know if it helps, but the specific translation I got was "YSI - Ancient Ys Vanished - Omen (1987)(Falcom)(en)[Tr by GhaleonX].zip"

Okay... I found the github site for that translation and I verified the CRCs and re-patched the original file so I know I've got a clean English patch.

So far no issues... I'm only really able to go into 3 buildings in the first area and then go out to the field to get my ass handed to me... so maybe it's just not far enough in.

One interesting thing is that this patch goes out of its way to change the colors of the in-game text when dealing with things like shopkeepers, etc... it's possible the fan patch might not be perfect. But more likely a bug with Hachibitto which doesn't sit well with me.

I have tested the following SCC music demos.
1-FuzzyLogic-SCCMusicDisc1 [disk][Original].DSK - Does not work.
2-FuzzyLogic-SCCMusicDisc1 [disk][WithSccDetectionFix].DSK - Works when CPU SPEED is set to: BOOSTED 20%
3-SCC Music Disc 2022 (Fuzzy Logic)(2022) - Works.

Thanks @esv_83 - I'll add them to my TO-DO.

Meanwhile, just checked in 1.1c with big improvements. I revamped the Memory/Slot handling and now Lubek with MSX-MUSIC runs (I think that was the oldest item on my current TO-DO list). A few other games that were not running are now running fine. I also improved Alpha Blend - it's only really useful for Screen 7 games (high rez) and was causing some minor glitching artifacts on more basic screen modes. This should all be working fine now. ROMs that are 64K in size should now properly detect and run with the right mappers. I've also added real Kana keys when the KANA LOCK is toggled for games that support it. Hachibitto is, after all, a Fantasy Japanese machine!

Edit: found a problem with my normal PSG click removal filter that was making the sound gritter than it should have been. Games like Galaga should have a wonderful chip-tune sound and you could hear it was just a bit too harsh. I've removed the filter for normal PSG games and reduced it for mixing with SCC. That fix is checked in.

On 1.1c Vampire Killer - Akumajō Dracula - Konami (1986) [Castlevania Rom Hack & Arcade Enhanced] [RC-744] boots and works well, but it doesn't have music. I also enabled SCC+ manually and nothing changed

It doesn't appear to play music in OpenMSX, WebMSX nor fMSX. My conclusion - the game hack never got finished or uses some very odd scheme that better emulators don't enable by default. Stick to one of the other many hacks that sound fine.

I have another game to report, whenever I try to load Contra there's the floppy noise but after a few seconds it brings up the BASIC interface

Intersting - Contra isn't a DISK game! It's a classic megarom cartridge by Konami. My guess is that there is a cracked version on disk but because the cart is so large, it's probably one of those rare cracked game that requires more than 128K of memory (cracked Snatcher on disk needs 256K). I could add the extra memory but really those cracked games are intended so that disk-based MSX machines could pirate and play the games without the original cartridge. But since Hachibitto will play the original cart ROM just fine, it's not really needed.

Edit: okay, Contra on disk will run with 128K but it's a really poor crack. It doesn't auto-load. When you get to the BASIC prompt, use FILES to see the list of files on disk. Use LOAD "GRYZOR.BAS" and then RUN to get it running. You will need SCC+ in options and the music is abysmal but that's how they coded it.

So many cracks/hacks were total junk. Intended to get the games semi-playable on machines with disk drives and without the original physical cartridge. For games like Contra - stick to the megarom cartridges the way God intended.

In the meantime, I added zoom/pan handling for 80 column mode. Not much uses it but when you load some cracks/trainers, they often present an instruction or options screen before the game plays and that's sometimes in 80 column mode. The text is unreadable on the poor little DS without zoom.

Next on my TO-DO list is handling multiple cartridges mainly to support the Konami cart-combos. But it's a LOT of work just to pull off some small gimicks (e.g. playing Gradius with the Twinbee ship).
