I wanted to share an early look at a Fallout 1 Wii U port that I’ve been testing and developing. It is based on Fallout Community Edition and work from the existing 3DS port, adapted into a native Wii U RPX.

It is already running on real Wii U hardware. So far I have successfully tested:

  • The main menu and normal gameplay
  • 1280×720 widescreen rendering
  • GamePad/controller cursor controls
  • Combat
  • Map transitions
  • Saving and loading
  • Intro videos
  • Music, dialogue and sound effects

The current stable test mirrors the game between the TV and GamePad. An experimental version is being developed that keeps the full 720p view on the TV while enlarging the inventory interface on the GamePad. Wii U on-screen keyboard support and proper HOME Menu shutdown handling are also being worked on.

There are still things to improve. The cursor is smoother while the game is paused, so performance and frame pacing could use optimization. Text can also be fairly small at 720p, and more extensive testing is needed for audio, movies, long play sessions and different areas of the game.

I’m not releasing a download yet because I want to test and stabilize it a bit more first. No original Fallout game data will be distributed—the eventual port will require files from a legally owned PC copy.

Credit goes to the Fallout Community Edition developers and the contributors behind the existing ports that made this possible. I’m sharing this now to see whether there is interest.

I’ll post further updates as testing continues.

The photo below is of the gamepad from my phone. Just some proof it is running.

Is legacy/Tiramisu easier to develop for than Aroma, or are you just covering more setups?

I plan on releasing a .RPX and .WUHB so everyone can use it anyway. .RPX is just the safer baseline for development right now.
