PSP-inspired frontend XOrA gets early access trailer, public release to follow in November

There's a lot of great ways to organise your games on an Android emulation handheld. With apps like ES-DE you can already access a plethora of unique aesthetics, with others like iiSU and Cocoon pushing the stylistic boat out there to give you a Nintendo-themed experience. For those wanting to relive the glory days of Sony's handhelds, XOrA might be the one to watch.

With the first look trailer having released today, along with a paid period of early access, XOrA brings all the stylistic nostalgia of the PSP's Cross Media Bar and pulls it into the modern day. With integrated RetroAchievements, messaging (assuming you're happy to link your social app of choice), and even a well-themed music player, we will soon have yet another fantastic tool for those emulating on the go. There's even a Vita-themed shortcut page for those of us out there who still feel something for Sony's most neglected handheld.

At the time of writing the app has just launched into a period of paid early access, with those interested able to download the app by contributing via the official ko-fi page and linking to the official Discord server. A free public release is set to follow in November.

A note on the usage of AI from the ko-fi page:

While 100% of the visuals are hand-made by myself, the back-end is in-fact mostly vibe-coded. This is largely because I don't really have the knowledge or experience to code anything myself, and I personally don't unconventional means as long as it works the way it should and looks exactly how I envisioned it. Not everyone will agree with that outlook, but that's okay.

1. The Ko-fi page states that the entire backend of the project is vibe-coded, something to consider if you wanna use it or not.

2. For some alternatives: Should you want a PSP/PS3-inspired XMB frontend, try WaveLauncher. If you like Vita bubble icons, Beacon has the option to set all icons as such.

Missed that one, just looked through the YT video description. Popped it on the main post so those interested can find it.

How the hell do you mix up the PSP's XMB interface with the dogshit Vita LiveArea? I love the Vita but god damn has the UI aged like piss.

I didn’t. If you click on the video, the vast majority of it covers the XMB themeing. The Vita bubbles are just shortcuts. It’s a weird choice of thumbnail though given the contents, I won’t disagree about that lol.

Never did like the bubbles thing so much so I just used folders when I had a Vita.

All I'm going to say is that XMB clone is very visually appealing; I like how it takes the best feature of PS3's upgraded XMB (full-screen preview) and adds it to the UI optimised for a small screen. The LiveArea clone though, it only has the layout, but none of the bubbliness of the bubbles, but I'd imagine that's going to be done at a later point.

I personally won't be using it, I don't even have a suitable Android/Linux handheld, but despite the vibe coded nature, I think the author has a knack for UI design, even if it is mostly cloned work.

What does vibe-coded means? Jeez, I'm getting old seriously
(Almost) fully AI-generated as opposed to AI-assisted, letting an AI agent do the development work, instead of the developer using their own experience and skills, with AI only used for occasional problem-solving or debugging (if that).

Can't really blame the guy after the iisu "team" turned him into Drama Of The Week over a swear word.

Didn't it turn out he made a number of homophobic comments?

Feel free to call me wokey WcWokefact but it sounds like he's proper fucking dickhead.

Essentially it was that and more, in a server that used to be his friend groups but got turned into the public iisu server, thus how everything even got found out.

Very neat, android emulation scene just keeps getting better. I was thinking that decades from now on if most of original consoles fail FPGAs and android emulation will be there to save day.

Shrugging all of that off as "a swear word" is so disingenuous that it tells a lot about your own view on many things. Slurs aren't just swears, these words have a ton of weight behind them.

I feel like this should have just been a design option in Iisu

Alright, so to be completely honest, I don't care that it was vibe coded as long as it works and isn't malicious.

Hell, the design, visuals, and static text on my GBAtemp signature were made by me from scratch in paint.net, but the code that grabs the recent game box art, pie chart, and statistics from my Infinite Backlog profile were mostly vibe coded. I don't care, because it's my personal signature and does exactly what I want it to do--as opposed to PSNprofiles' and Exophase's gaming cards which I can't customize to my exact liking. My coding experience is otherwise limited to tricking out my MySpace profile in the early 2000s and messing around in Adobe Flash in the early 2010s.

But even with that said, I have a huge issue with the fact that this guy is even asking for donations. For a vibe coded project that at most cost him a $20 per month ChatGPT subscription. THAT'S what makes this completely ridiculous. What are we paying for, your time commitment? I give him props for disclosing it, and I otherwise wouldn't care. But share your vibe coded project for the love of the game, not in the hopes of getting a few bucks.

Disclaimer: Anyone who wants me to vibe code them a gamer card signature, just shoot me a DM and I'll sell you one for a low-low price of $29.99. Why pay someone with actual programming knowledge when you can just pay me?
