Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets free Switch 2 update, adds eight-player multiplayer, higher resolution visuals, camera support, and more

After more than a year, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has gotten a fresh update with a focus on the Switch 2, and it's surprisingly meaty. For those Switch 2 players, they'll be looking at higher resolution output on both the TV and Switch 2 display, shorter loading times, support for up to eight players in local multiplayer, and even support for USB cameras when playing online. It's worth noting that camera support is limited to GameChat though.

On top of this, all owners of the game can also enjoy a small tweak to the speed increase you get for collecting a coin, a tweak to Boo that will remove slow-downs while active, and most notably, a full 96 race VS Mode, allowing for a functional All Cup Tour for those who own the DLC.

Support for the Nintendo Switch 2 system​

  • Added support for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, allowing for clearer visuals.
  • Shortened the loading time before races and battles begin.
  • Added support for 5–8 players in Multiplayer.
    • You can connect up to seven Nintendo Switch controllers (Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers) to the Nintendo Switch 2 system. In order to play with eight people, you need at least one Joy-Con 2 controller or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.
  • Added CameraPlay support.
    • A USB camera (sold separately) is required to use CameraPlay.
    • Players can turn camera ON or OFF in Multiplayer (2-4 players) and Online Play modes.
    • In order to use a camera on the internet, players must participate in a GameChat session. The camera footage and microphone audio will be sent only to GameChat members.
    • When the camera is ON, the player’s face is displayed during the race.

General​

  • Increased player speed during races by the equivalent of one coin.
  • Players will not slow down while using Boo to become invisible, even when entering an offroad area.
  • Players with access to the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass will have “96 Races” added to the “VS Race” rule settings.

I don't know who has the attention span to finish a 96-race cup but I guess that's cool. I certainly don't.

How are they fitting 8 players onto one screen? 3-4 already feels cramped.

Boo is now kinda OP I guess, it's almost like having star power. Not that I'm complaining, sounds like a fun change.

Otherwise just minor changes. Game already looks and runs good so I doubt the difference will be very noticeable.

I think I'll still stick to CTGP Deluxe over this. It just adds so much more replay value to a game I had played to death. I don't have any desire to go back to the official game without all that extra content.

Gives me a reason to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 4K/60 in Marathon Mode. It's been like 9-10 months or a year since I last played it (unlocked everything and amiibo costumes too).
 
I'm just glad I bought MK World physically rather than digitally. Because after getting 3 stars in every cup and getting a decent rank online, I can't think of a single reason not to sell it and buy MK8D instead.

I wanted to love MK World so bad but it just hasn't hit. And the updates are too few and far between. Maybe one day it'll hit the level of MK8D, but we're not there yet.

Why? I did not broke any rule, I did not put any prohibited word, nor link nor ask or offered prohibited material.

But you know what? they hate so much the freedom of speech what will find something to justify themselves or will delete «just because» as little biased tyrant they are.
 
This is so random that it's gotta be that one company Nintendo bought they must just let them work on older games and whenever they're ready they'll just put the update out.
 
FREE update upgrade for a previous Mario Kart title? That's unexpected for sure. If it were EA, the upgrade would cost as much as the game itself, they try really hard to discourage anyone playing anything but the latest title in the series (and never update them, even to fix security issues).

8 player local multiplayer is insane, but considering how gigantic TVs are nowadays, at a high resolution, it may just work. Insane to think about. I bet it isn't the first game to do this, but it definitely is the first I heard of doing that.

World has gotten a few free updates tbf. Just not new tracks. Biggest thing was new routes for knockout tour and some reworked intermission tracks.

MKW is dry up so it makes sense to once again boost up MK8D. I'll play it when I get home on my Sony 55" OLED, no brag.
