How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

That's a swift ignore from me, and I am confident many will follow, with an additude like that.

Level 1 account with no forum etiquette should stay out of forums. Nice tough-guy bio btw. I lol'd.
good! coming from mr.who contributed nothing of value to my post calling it yapping! rude!

While you may or may not avoid reporting on it because AI was used, I think the starting topic if this thread is itself dishonest. While I'm grateful to see that GBATemp is finally having the conversation, GBATemp has been suppressing coverage of anything knowingly using AI.

I used to read GBATemp daily for over a decade. I've stopped almost entirely know because I see plainly I'm not getting the real news anymore, but a curated agenda.

That's not dishonest. GBATemp didn't promise you what it would cover and then reneg on that promise. If you think you were ever getting unvarnished, unselected news from any particular source you're being foolish. Every single outlet decides what it publishes. Ironically in this context: another human has always been deciding what gets published. The "real news" from any given outlet was always a curated agenda insofar as selections were made.

To the point, many of the replies to this thread plainly indicate why content concerning AI has been "suppressed" as you put it. People are pissed. The site has to consider the apparent backlash to what you seem to imply should be balanced reporting on AI-generated works in comparison to human-generated works.

If you two scrolled up, there was infact quite a lot of value in my posts, and it didn't take me dropping a metric ton of bullshit on everyone else's screen to accomplish that. But I don't expect you to understand. Since you seem to think this is an ad-homming thread. Might I suggest Edge of the Forum?

I can care less if people are pissed but I'd rather not see the site respond to the back lash because it rewards piss poor human behavior and encourages it.

you contributed nothing to my post and commented more so on its length rather then focusing on what I was talking about.

least i am not gbatemp. so, its not my problem. lol. but if they wanna cater thats a shame.

If the dev knows how to code and uses it to assist or automate certain task. But if the "dev" doesnt understand what the ai is producing then they arent capable of saying its safe.
You said it all. When talking about language (programming or not) exclusively, only non-programmers will parrot "Ai SlOp" like a mentally challenged person. It's a tool and a pretty good one if you know how to use it.
The issue arises when amateurs start vibe coding and distribute whatever they made to the general public like it's a proper program. It seems like a lot of these recomps are like that.

Translations are another can of worms. I'm inclined to trust LLMs a lot more than humans on this, but for an actually good translation it NEEDS to be reviewed by someone who is a native in the target language and is proficient in the source language, something very rare.

see thats a good take see I think AI can lead to good translation but such translations shouldn't be given the green light until someone reviews it. again it comes down to how is ai being used. if you make something with ai and just publish it willy nilly like Microsoft is doing well, thats how you fuck up an entire OS. there is a way to use it and a way not to use it. so, its about balance. Its more of a work flow utility it helps you stream line shit. lets say there is something you suck at and there is no one to help you. I aint gonna fault you for using AI. who am I?

simply make a tag on the temp, ensure projects people look at have an ai tag, and you're good.

a tag is brought to disclose but if you want to go the extra mile, you can put vibecoded or AI assisted tags or something more appropriate

that's all there needs to be done about this at least according to me. continue to moderate those that start arguments though, cause while everyone is free to have different opinions, to it going out of hand is a problem, and that's a big no no.

this would all be solved if one we didnt discuss ai because there is nothing to discuss people are just making a big fuss out of nothing. their just being overly picky and two we dont need a tag again ai disclosure is a privilege. disclosing it will only lead to dev harassment. which is not cool devs need to be left alone.

There's one thing that amazes me in these projects, though: the amount of people with quite a lot of money and time to spend.
After using both Claude Code and Chatgpt Codex with their entry-level subscription, it's become quite clear that programming with LLMs is very expensive. You reach the 5-hour and weekly limits way too fast with anything with more complexity than a "Hello World".

You can avoid that with Chinese models

Deepseek I get a billion tokens per $10

You don’t even get close to that with Claude or chat gpt

There’s also less restrictions

i applaud all the progess in the homebrew community do to AI assistance. It has given life to a lot of projects that wouldnt have been completed otherwise. I think some people have a passion for working on homebrew but not the complete set of coding skills to be able to do everything and AI helps alot to help those with passion but not the complete skillset to do it all on their own.

theres also burnout that can happen when manually coding big projects that AI can help do some of the legwork to keep people energetic and making progress at a rate where they dont get burnt out on a project and quit before completion.

theres other areas besides homebrew gaming development that I am anti AI but for the gaming community I think AI can do wonderful things. alot of people are going to fight over it but keep in mind if it provides entertainment at a cheaper cost to develop software than what the big game developers are charging then its a good set of free market competition to get the big game developers to lower their prices.
