YouTuber Dammit Jeff offers large bounty for definitive PS5 modification in partnership with the FULU Foundation, currently sat at over $30,000

A YouTuber with over half a million subscribers, Dammit Jeff, (in partnership with Louis Rossmann's FULU Foundation)has offered a substantial bounty for the release of a significant PS5 exploit. In a video posted to his channel yesterday, he detailed his plan to revolutionise the hacking scene for the console in response to Sony's much maligned decision to go fully digital in 2028. He also gave instructions on how to keep the console on the lowest possible firmware by disabling updates, along with a scathing rebuttal to Sony's talking points regarding the shift.

"This feels like it's only a net benefit for Sony. That's it. The only thing we get out of this is, 'Oh, well... It's a little more convenient.' ... I keep seeing the same statistic everywhere- Yes. 85% of PlayStation game sales were digital last year, that is correct. But- And this is important- Adoption does not equate preference. ... How many people do you think chose the disc version of the PS5 over the digital version of the PS5? 82%. ... Clearly consumers still want at least the choice to decide where and how they buy their games."

Both Dammit Jeff and the FULU Foundation put up $10,000 each, and small dollar donations are coming in steadily. The bounty is totalled at $32,572 at the time of writing, while the largest payout Sony has ever made for the disclosure of an exploit was $20,000 to TheFloW's exploit from 4 years ago. There are significant conditions attached to receive the bounty, however.

The disclosed exploit must:
  • Demonstrably allow for the modification or bypassing of the PS5 hypervisor to the extent that an alternate OS can be booted (Stability of the alternate OS is not required)
  • Either be a one-off implementation, or an implementation that takes no more than 10 minutes to execute if it needs to be repeated
  • Work on firmware version 13.42 or newer (The most recent firmware at the time of writing)
  • Be able to access the PS5's primary computation, memory, and graphics hardware on the alternate OS
  • Allow the PS5 to continue to be capable of being booted into its original operating system, with the capability to play PS5 games
On top of that, if the modification is a hardware modification, it must also not require hardware that costs a meaningful percentage of the PS5's cost, and be able to be carried out by someone with only basic soldering skills and equipment.

It was reported at the beginning of the month that Sony anticipated the negative backlash toward the decision to cease producing physical games, and while a huge backlash continues to flood their social media pages, the company has remained steadfast in its decision-making. Weaponising crowd funding is just the latest in a long line of schemes to strike back at the company, but this has gotten significantly more traction than any of the previous ones. Then there's 3D printers forcing their propriety format on you and nothing else with firmware updates. If companies get away with enough of that stuff, it can be used as an excuse to throw out future cases or rule in favor of the corporation (this part sets precedent, and is extremely dangerous), so to avoid this huge can of worm being opened (and it WILL set off an uncontrollable domino effect), we need to put our foot down. This specifically may not affect us, but letting it slide will allow these megacorps to have an excuse to completely get away with stuff that DOES affect us.

Fun fact with 3d printers it’s much worse than you think. A lot of brands just straight abandon their product while still selling it.

For example I have a now old method of doing multi color printing. “Mosaic pallate 2s” it’s a machine that cuts and splices filament inline.

$4-600 depending on your configuration and still sold

Has not had updates in 6 years, features promises never delivered, and the company still sells and produces them. When they themselves have even said the product is not supported since they pivoted to industrial machines

That shouldn’t be legal. Especially still selling them

That was my thought too

However if it's between 30k and sticking it to the man, and 50k for groveling and an NDA - you might still get people opting for the 30k

It’s all about GTA 6 and hackers will be stupid if they release something on the latest fw now. Technically all the new games are dumped and playable already, so releasing a new exploit will be a waste at this moment. Hopefully we will see something on Christmas ;)

Sad that people will put of over $30k for a console hack. People out there hungry and with no place to live, but lets give someone $30+k for a console hack instead. Which is for what? So they can install, get this, DIGITAL COPIES. :lol: And how exactly is that going to make Sony change their mind? Answer, it's not. Because the amount of PlayStation owners that even care about this entire "no discs" thing is like not even 1/2 of 1%.

Totally agree. This will do nothing. Why would a hacker dot this when they can discover 2 exploits on the latest fw then give them to sony for $40k? There isnt really incentive here

If I am successful (I have a53 fully reversed)

That $30k will be paid within a month I am sure. Sony will drag their ass

It could literally solve a lot of mine and other folks problems . A quick payout like that isn’t something to sniff at

Sony also isnt guaranteed the max payout and can decide to give you a % and now your method is burned

It doesn’t hurt you, or make your life (anyone reading this) to care about the greater good of the community and future of gaming

I understand what you are saying but I just could not care less about this. I have way more important stuff in my life to worry about. I don't have streaming subscriptions. I dont have smart appliances, except my PS5 if you count that a smart device. I just don't care. And I don't think there is a way to stop it. I really don't. But I respect you all for trying and to stand up for yourself and each other. And again, I have way more important stuff than this is my life.

Yup...just to end up installing digital games. This is stopping nothing.

it’s giving users the opportunity to use their hardware as they paid for it

You can install Linux and turn it into a steam machine, which I agree still digital games…but think about the significance of that and how cheap PS5s are in comparison to PC prices nowadays ?

it gives users the freedom to choose and not be affected by the AI bubble as well. There’s more to life bro than games it’s a bigger picture

What I want to know is, how many of those disc versions were incomplete and/or unplayable without a patch that was only available with an Internet connection..?

I have yet to buy a single disc that can’t be played besides just waiting a million years for it to install

I can download multiple PSN games in the time it takes for 1 ps5 disc to copy

Sure, you may be able to technically play them, but are you insinuating that no disc games have game breaking bugs, crashes, progression blockers, or major gameplay problems that require a downloaded patch to fix? Because, well, yeah. LOL!

So just because a solution isn’t perfect we shouldn’t aim for it at all?

Nothing in the world would get done if we could only wait for perfect solutions before moving forward.

If you don’t like it then it’s clearly not for you.
