Sony is moving away from physical discs, will soon only release PlayStation games digitally

Sony made a shocking announcement today, revealing that the company plans to move away from physical game releases in the future. Citing claims of how the industry is moving away from physical copies and disc-based games, and prefers digital media, PlayStation will follow suit, and will only release PlayStation games digitally. Starting January 2028, physical disc production will end, and you'll only be able to purchase video games through a digital format, either from retailers or PlayStation themselves.

According to the most recent financial report from Sony, only 3% of PlayStation's annual sales came from physical software releases, with projections for that already low number set to fall even further through the end of the PlayStation 5's lifecycle.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

So if you forget to wear your motorcycle helmet and get into an accident and end up in a coma for four years, you might lose your digital purchases.

Wear a helmet; problem solved.
You could have done EVERYTHING by the book, including wearing a helmet, and still end up in a coma for four years.

keep your shitty psn account $ony when the ps6 is hacked the shit out of (and it will be) you won't need an account OR online. i can see the glorious future it's going to be just like the good old wii days again :P

As an amateur dev i can tell you companies are gonna use AI like nothing before.Imagine this : you have an uncharted like game with zombies ,you need 10 animators ,5 env artist,2 to charac design ,each characters needing hundreds of animations.50 employees needing 3 months to create all game assests and animations. With proper tools, you can shrink that team to 10 persons. No mocap tools needed, new ai can analyse videos and keyframe animations.generating several skins, decorations and assets.faster ai ennemy creations .Big companies will use that to save money.quality will suck.Only indies and veteran dev with small studios will be able to make something big.you can even generate voice now.

Damn, I've been locked up in jail for 3 years and 6 months, can't wait to get home and play all my legally purchased digital games on my PS.
This.... actually happened to someone I knew but it was their Gmail account so they lost access to all their accounts under that email.

They actually cooked the statistics they used. They included all digital only games in their assessment (including cheap ~$2 indie games), as well as PlayStation plus. For actual games released on physical and digital, physical purchases greatly exceed digital purchases. Seems more like an excuse they used to justify their greed here on ownership, control, and cost savings. They will likely even raise the prices on these games in addition to being only digital.

Sony is also setting themselves to be competitors with Apple and Valve instead of a physical media monopoly. They may very well lose this fight over time.
Yes they did cook it. I also heard from spawnwave that the plant the sony uses to make discs pumps out over 600,000 per week i think it was.

These stupid scenarios... It doesn't matter! Rules are changing/changed that only favor Sony, that give you less options or power. There is nothing convenient or a problem being solved for me, there isn't a good argument on why this is a good thing for the consumer.

it does still mean something. It means that the used game market would be gone. Game stores would likely start closing. Games at places like Amazon or other retailers will never be on sale, forcing people to 100% rely on PSN store prices at all times just to play the game. Physical copies means you can transfer ownership, or resell the game if you ever choose to. Removing that check and balance from the equation will only hurt consumers, allowing them to even raise prices higher at any point down the road if they choose to (even for old games). Not to mention their little user agreement / terms and conditions state that they have the right to remove any digital content at any point in time with zero refunds if they want. And all your PS4 and PS5 discs would be essentially paper weights without a PS4 / PS5. Lots of people sell their last gen console to cover the price of buying the next gen. That won't be happening this time.
This. I wish people would realize this. A disc with a code on it is better than nothing physical, because giving Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo complete control over where you buy your video games is going to be god awful.

"Lol, why would we lower the price of x video game?! Not like Amazon or Gamestop is going to sell the physical copy of x video game for cheaper, LMAO!"
