The googles is the closest you will get to the real deal unless you own a Virtual Boy.

I don't understand why the heck the Virtual Boy of all things is Region Locked and paywalled behind a subscription service more so as you even need an accessory to use it to start with.

The Super Mario for Virtual Boy demo was just a port of the Super Mario Bros remake for Snes first level I think? It was only supposed to be a demo because having the exact game but looking worse was not gonna help sales.

One of the biggest problems the Virtual Boy had is how much the games looked like Gameboy games. Turns out that with only ugly red you really cannot notice a game is 32 bits, more so in a quite subpar Virtual Reality headset.

Even Wario Land feels not unfinished but too short, about as long... as the average Gameboy game.

Yes short games were done due to all those regulations and to avoid damaging eyesight but again it did not help the Gameboy comparisons.

Also the name.

I'm suspicious that they're releasing it to take down Red Viper. That's the only way any of that (North American region specific, paywalled) makes sense, because the system would be available in the region that's most likely to use Red Viper.

I realize that's not where the dev is located, but it still seems to be the most logical reason. Not releasing this in Japan is incredibly bizarre otherwise.

There are Japan exclusive games and the Japanese version of Smash Bros games didn't delete the Virtual Boy from their Gallery. The only reason I can think of is that since the accessories are either cardboard or a chunk of plastic they don't want to release in Japan first as they would be way cheaper there and they are also region free so they don't want to be exported outside Japan and make them lose money.

At minimum they should let you have all 14 games at once if you bought the plastic accessory since it is a hundred dollars, that's more that the Gamecube cost brand new from Nintendo after it had a price cut. Heck is half of what a Switch Lite used to cost.

Agreed on that last point. Considering how little would be wasted on the cardboard version, and the generally better perception of the Virtual Boy over there, they really have no excuse not to have released it on the Japanese NSO service with the cardboard visor only.

I feel like there might have been a general misinterpretation of the "US only" message for the plastic thing on the American website. It might mean not other territories that might be looking at the US website (Mexico etc? I don't actually know), rather than literally the US and no other countries anywhere. We certainly had the VB stuff in the UK direct, and the plastic thing is on the UK site. The first thing I heard after the direct was that Japan are getting a slightly different selection of games to the West, this was before anyone spotted the "US only" message for preorders.

Yeah, curiosity got the better of me and I saw it in the Japanese direct, so I'm a little less cynical now. I'm still a little paranoid there's going to be a Cease and Desist coming for Red Viper, though.

Well Japan got Virtual Boy games that never got an English version.

The only English exclusive game I remember is Nester's Funky Bowling that is quite bad to average and is not even the best Bowling for the Virtual Boy. The game was most likely rushed as heck and it shows.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to get the banner for the forwarders working, i read the documentation and repeated the instructions step by step numerous times, but keep receiving the message:

ERROR: open file banner.cgfx failed

ERROR: banner.cgfx is not a cgfx file

on the command prompt, thankfully when i run the cia it boots up into the rom perfectly

this seems like more of a txobtool issue, idk

Cool, the problem being finding someone who actually wants to play Virtual Boy games with you.
Well, hey, you don't have to shove your face into one to play it. That might make it more appealing.

Meanwhile I decided to pay over $300 just to stick it to Nintendo for asking me to pay $100 for the privilege of playing emulated Virtual Boy games.

I got the perma-fix applied and finally got a stand for it. Still waiting for the MrCART.

Remember to not ignore it if you feel any pain, headaches or nausea.

Gonna get the link cable mod? Kinda pointless without a second unit.

If I had the money I would get a Sega Saturn, lots of cool Translations and Mods of Sega Saturn games in recent years.
