If done properly is a nice idea. Still we already have that one that starts with an H and ends in Shop and its green and all and runs on the 3DS too, so, no need to rush this one.

Still, kudos for those involved in the project.

So i'm going to guess this is the service Pretendo publicly denounced.

I guess they found a way to dowload stuff from Nintendo servers again? In that case, no, thnks, i'd rather keep using the green shop wich is hosted in a completely separate server.

I just got my NNID back into my 3DS, not risking it. I'll use it to download my legally owned content and get the rest from anywhere else.
I think everything is hosted separatley - like hShop, but with an eShop skin.

This is the exact issue with pretendo they pretend they are high and mighty and better than the rest
This i can confirm, i spoke with john within the comment section of a video over a year ago as he was responding to concerns primarily about the team behind the service (Rverse not pretendo, but the team has a big overlap last i saw), assured me it'd be looked into and whatnot the fact that many still have negative things to say, says alot about the handling of these projects.

All in all I want them to thrive so this scene can actually get going, but there is unfortunately alot holding back even things I've held my tongue from talking about for the sake of hoping things would improve hence why i wasn't really surprised about the fate of brewtendo.

I mean. It's their service, they decide how they want it to be used. Being homebrew doesn't mean having no rules.

Plus their issue isn't piracy, but using Pretendo Network for piracy. They want nothing of that, and i think that deserves some respect.

Hey, as long as that's just what they say on the record to stay out of Nintendo's line of fire then whatever. I can get that; Nintendo is extremely prone to taking action regardless of intent or current status of the platform in question.

But if you get the same sort of response in a "just between you and me" setting where you don't have to puff out your chest and express a stance that is only held for the purposes of not seeing everything torn down by a salty corporation then it's more like "Bro, you DO realize you haven't been able to buy a DS game in over 10 years? Why all the hostility?"

Basically the difference between a moderator saying "Sorry, we don't discuss that here, the rules are clear on that." and "'Game preservation' is an excuse used by cheapskates."

Why ban people over piracy for a system you can’t buy games officially on…also I can tell you for certain there’s a handful of pretendo devs that have nothing but pirated games on their system
Pretendo doesn't police nor care about which games you installed and whether they're pirated or not. They only ban discussion about piracy on their services, so Nintendo won't have a legal reason to sue them.

im not sure how true this is so correct me if i'm wrong but i've heard that nintendo is aware of their existence but just isnt interested in taking any kind of action.

They have a dedicated team working on it now. Not saying they didn't before but the progress is night and day. It's really cool what they are doing

That might probably be because Pretendo doesn't really do anything that might give Nintendo a reason to take action.

All that they do is make replacement servers for NEX games on 3DS & Wii U and distribute patches to make the games connect to the servers, and neither of those contain any copyrighted content.

For example, their Miiverse clone uses an entirely different custom theme which doesn't contain any Nintendo assets.

They also don't have plans to bring back the eShop, and Badge Arcade will only be revived with custom badges.

Well, here's the thing: Not everyone's principles are the same, there are some homebrew and emulation devs who actually despise piracy. Ask the devs of certain mods, ask the Azahar dev who only just recently opened the door to unencrypted roms, ask the Gecko devs who designed their software in a way it only worked with original devs.

And, indeed, ask the Pretendo devs.

I see no harm in respecting the developers' intent, this isn't a high horse kind of thing, in fact, i think framing it that way only disrespects them further, it's their philosphy and it's perfectly respectable.

They aren't even disallowing the use of pirated roms - and god knows they would have the means to check - they're just saying they don't want their custom server used for piracy, wich i think it's perfectly fine.

EDIT: I know it's hard to believe, but some devs love and respect the source material to that extent, either because they do, because they grew up with it, because the understand how hard is to be a dev and would rather have the devs be paid for their work or whatever. Honestly speaking, throwing a fit and denying them that is a level of entitlement that i find insufferable and that usually comes from people who only want MuH FrEe GaEmZ and is unable of actual empathy.
