so far this version of retroarch is great, the only problem i have is that games takes too long to load when you have cheevos on, and it freezes for a bit when there's a cheevo with a counter in the corner.
is this fixable or the Wii u just cant manage the multitasking that cheevos imply?

For me turning this on messes the picture on Gamepad: scanlines are incorrect and overall the picture looks distorted. I tried crt-easymode with Shader#0 Scale 3x, yee64, yeetron.
Btw do you use Optimize for Wii U gamepad in Settings -> Output?
Looking for the best CRT shader for output on TV and GamePad.

No, you can't have a good picture on both the gamepad AND the TV, at the same time. All the things I did in my big settings post were showing off for my TV in 1920x1080 resolution.

If you want to optimize for the gamepad you will probably have to mess around a great deal. And think a bit about the gamepad resolution and how to make that look good. I didn't think about this at all.

Hello I'm having an issue I hope someone can help me solve. I have a few PSX games on my SD card and running Retroarch 1.19.0 for Aroma with PCSX-ReARMed (r24I ee623ed8). Some of the games are .bin/.cue format, and some are .chd, my issue is when I scan content/directory it will show all my games being scanned, 1/25 ect, but it will only scan the .bin/.cue format games. if I go to scan file and go into my rom directory it shows all games there including the .chd formatted games, I can click on one and it says scan finished but they don't show in the PSX games directory. It's been a while since I've messed with this but I believe I did convert these games to .chd using chdman. What can I do? Just convert back to .bin/.cue? Reading around I was under the impression that Retroarch Aroma can use this file format.

EDIT - It appears the .chd roms work when using the Load content menu and selecting game directly, just for some reason the scanner isn't adding to PSX directory, not a huge deal but is this a bug or is there something I'm missing to get them to show there?

Can someone help me? I'm having trouble using RetroArch in 4:3 on my Wii U.

I left my Wii U connected to my CRT TV because I was playing some GameCube and Wii games. I set the console to 4:3 on the settings and it worked perfectly. Most Wii U games don't have a 4:3 mode (off the top of my head, I only remember Shakedown Hawaii, which has native 4:3 mode on the Wii U), but the mode is still very useful for GameCube and Wii games.

But then, I tried using RetroArch on my CRT TV, but to my disappointment, although the RetroArch menu was perfectly in 4:3, none of the emulators worked in that mode. They displayed black bars as if they were on a 16:9 TV.

Does anyone know how to solve this, or is RetroArch on the Wii U not compatible with 4:3?

Hi. Anyone was able to completely run Retroarch using WiiU Pro controller? I mean with Gamepad completely disconnected and turned off.

Thanks

Hey there, I recently homebrewed my wiiU using Aroma and decided to add RetroArch in the mix. I grabbed an rpx from the 1.19 version and everything was working fine. I booted up this morning to realize that I was now in version 1.22. I assume it updated itself?

Only issue is, I had no icons (they were buggy more like it). So I downloaded the assets, and anytime I tried to restart or quit, or load a game, I get stuck in a black screen.

Upon seeing this, I removed all the retroarch folder from the SD card and replaced it with the folder I grabbed the first time (1.19). I get the menu right, but loading a game still gets me a black screen. Furthermore, I got an actual crash saying something about memory (it was an error stack, not an actual wiiU error) when I was trying to change the inputs for the second port... and within the stack, it somehow was still mentioning the 1.22 version...

Am I missing something? Is the NAND somehow corrupted as well? Or is it simply something I overlooked in the SD card when I removed the 1.22 version?

Thanks!

Ok since you said you were using Aroma, make sure to download compatible version. Try this (make sure to delete the config file inside SD:\Retroarch\retroarch.cfg):

Here is the direct link: https://www.mediafire.com/file/8md8k64ph7pa0q0/WiiU_Aroma_Current_Build.7z/file

By the way, what is the plan to add the Aroma retroarch version to the Hombrew Store? instead of having to look for it in this thread.

So, after a bit of research I realized that the version I thought was 1.19 was in fact the "stable" 1.22 version from the folder in OP. After getting the 1.19 from this post back, it did work without any issues, but now I have two questions:

- Should we consider that the "latest" stable version for Aroma is 1.19? Should we not update at all?
- Does Retroarch update in the background by itself? And if so, is there a way to disable it?

At least, I can play all of my games now, so honestly, I don't mind staying with this version :)

By the way, what is the plan to add the Aroma retroarch version to the Hombrew Store? instead of having to look for it in this thread.

I also wondered this, I never tried to install it that way considering how 1.22 worked out for me, but I would be willing to know if we're even supposed to install that.

Thanks!

I'm wondering the same thing too.. but for the moment we, aroma users, all use the latest version shared by ploggy.

I am sure RetroArch on the WiiU never updates automatically. So you should be fine.

@ploggy Do you thing, it makes sense to add your retroarch port to HB Store (marked as Aroma Variant) or directly replace the tiramisu version as the official one.

I have no problem with the Aroma wip being added to the HB Store. :) Just have it clearly marked as for Aroma only a disclaimer saying once you have the Aroma wip don't use the Online Core Updater from within RA because it will just pull the latest Tiramisu Cores from the Libretro server and mess RA up. All the other Online Updater stuff should be good tho, (perhaps dont use the assets downloader as well actually)

So I installed Retroarch info my Wii U because I wanted to get retro achievements while playing on my CRT. The problem I'm having is that popping of achievements seems really inconsistent. So far, Crash Bandicoot on the PS1 core has worked correctly, but Hook and Super Thunder Blade on Genesis GC weren't unlocking achievements for stage clears and I didn't get credit for completing Gunforce on SNES 9X (but I did get achievements for completing levels 1-3).

When I achievements don't pop, I check in retroarch and it says that I'm logged in and hardcore mode is enabled.

I think this may be because we're using old out of date cores.

Anyone know of any fixes?

First of all, thanks so much for your hard work.

@ploggy The thing about the test build is that you're kinda forced to set a button combo for the RA menu because the home button will bring up the Wii U Menu now (and then the RA menu). I mean it's great that now we can actually bring up the Wii U menu while in RA since with it we have access to gamepad brightness control, web browser and other things, but I think a better approach would be having the Wii U menu brought up by holding the home button for 2 seconds, and the RA menu by a simple press, since you don't need to get to Wii U menu as often as the RA one.

I just realised there's an option in Settings>Input>Allow Wii U Home Menu disabling this will allow you to open only the Retroarch Menu with the Home Button :D (don't forget to save RA cfg after) ;)

I'm in the process of updating the our current Aroma build to the latest Retroarch source, so far so good but there's a couple issues that need to be fixed, the Home Button's causing Retroarch to crash and for some reason messing with the Threaded Video option causes a crash too, but as long as you stay away from that option and disable the above ^^ option for the Home Menu it's a good workaround for now I guess.
Good news is I've managed to compile the PS1 and Picodrive Core's for Aroma properly now.

I can upload the build now if you don't mind working around the bugs mentioned above? (and of course any others I haven't found yet) :P

My plan is to get those 2 issues fixed and then update the Pcsxrearmed Core to the latest source too. Claude Ai willing lol

Turns out the first bug about the Home Menu was just me being an idiot and not deleting my cfg files between updates :P
Home Button and Menu is working fine. (but the option to disable the WiiU Menu is still valid for those who would rather the Home button just open the Retroarch Menu)
Thanks to @MrHaram for catching it. :D

I'll post the new build then.
Build 12/05/26 Remember to clean all cfg's before installing new builds and stay away from the Threaded Video option hahaha

EDIT: Added build + Mame2010 Core to my sig.

Did it work before?

What do you think regarding adding the default MAME core? By any chance we can get? Or it's completely unusable being too heavy for Wii Us?

Would love to see a default MAME core and a 2010 version if possible. Some romsets I own only seem to work with the 2010 version

It did work from what I can remember. technically it still does work, it just takes a few minutes for the console to unfreeze :P

I was never able to compile Mame Main or Mame2010, too many errors I couldn't fix. Mame 2009 was the latest that was able to be compiled and even that was a buggy mess :/ Unless someone who really knows what they're doing does it, it wont be possible.
