Anbernic RG Rotate announced, a retro Android handheld with a rotating screen

Surprisingly, Anbernic is the first retro handheld company to introduce some innovation this year by way of the Anbernic RG Rotate. The company officially made the announcement today by sharing the following video on their YouTube channel:

While specs details of the RG Rotate have not been announced, Anbernic does note that it features a self-developed ultra-thin alloy hinge. It will also be available in two color options (Aurora Silver and Polar Black) and buyers will have the choice between an aluminum or ABS shell.

What? Why would any person with a phone use this device to listen to music in the first place?
Dedicated music players are still a thing, people like to keep their music and their phone separate 🤷

Do these things not run basic android you can load up with, whatever you want as it is?
No, their cheaper / low spec models run a simple firmware (or you can use one of the custom firmwares), they are too weak for (current) Android.

This is really a terrible company, blind imitation...
Is there nothing left to copy in the game console world? Does ANBERNIC not care about WSC?

anbernic really needs to get into the phone business. So many cool form factors that I don't care about playing games on
I like the form factors and own a few even, but Anbernic's software support is sadly not quite up to snuff, the open source community tends to make them way better with Rocknix, Knulli and GammaOS Next. I live in hope, though.

Pretty sure its 4:3 because literally everything that thing can emulate used to run 4:3 natively.

Otherwise - not just a hinge, but a rotating hinge....... so e-waste is now getting frailty already built in? lmao

Shmups on a rotating 16:9 would be amazing but I can see how a handheld like that wouldn't work in practice

Or they could just make a button layout that also works sideways, like that MagicX One 35 handheld. You hold it in landscape mode for normal games, and portrait for shmups.

Looks nice and all but that fix for the shoulder buttons is a nightmare.
Yes, it looks like an afterthought, and the grip in vertical mode is probably horribly uncomfortable, but they seem like easy problems to solve if someone were to go about about making such a device. The MagicX is more like a proof of concept that such a handheld could work.

I still don't understand the appeal of most of these "retro" handhelds. If you want a DAP, buy a DAP.
If you want a portable game console... buy one decent one and stop rebuying a slightly different thing every time they release a new one?
I could understand if they had a big jump in performance but most of them are the same thing with a slightly different button arrangement.

I don't get the point of this form factor either. It barely changes, the screen isn't protected when it folds, it's missing a headphone jack if it's meant to be a DAP competitor, etc.

And as far as DAPs go, there are plenty of decent ones that aren't too expensive. Something like the HiBy R1 seems to still be good value and worthwhile, although longevity of Android-based devices in general is an entirely separate discussion (and another reason I'm not keen on buying most of these things).

I bought a Miyoo Mini+ and thought it was junk, especially with the highly annoying PWM whine, but anyone who criticises it gets completely destroyed by the fanboys, so it's barely even worth engaging with these people.
It seems to mostly be out-of-touch Gen Xers who are buying these things, for what it's worth.
