Is there any reason to believe Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD will actually come out?

They've been hotly anticipated for years now and I'm not sure whether to keep on waiting or just bring out the Wii U and pray it still turns on.

I don’t think so.

With the highly rumored OOT remake for Switch 2, I think Nintendo might be starting a new remake cycle, with bigger and more modern upgrades for the 3D Zelda games.

My predictions for the Switch 2 era (based on absolutely nothing):

2026: OOT Switch 2 Remake (Monolith Soft / Nintendo EPD)
2027: A Link Between Worlds HD for Switch 1 (by Tantalus) — I think they’ll want to have something for Switch 1 in the year the movie comes out
2028 (if not later): New 3D Zelda for Switch 2
2029: 2D Zelda from Grezzo
2030: Majora’s Mask Switch 2 Remake (Monolith Soft / Nintendo EPD)

2031: maybe a 2D multiplayer game?
2032: maybe a Hyrule Warriors game based on the lore of the new 3D Zelda?
2033: …

Switch 3 (or whatever it ends up being called):
Remakes of WW and TP
... and a new Zelda game, maybe even a sequel in the same engine.

Something like that.

I think WW + TP will be NSO-only on Switch 2, while Nintendo saves full remake-level upgrades for the next generation. These games are basically system sellers. Simple HD remasters of 10–15 year old versions just don’t cut it anymore. If Nintendo wants to sell systems, now and in the future, modernized versions of these games are guaranteed backup titles they can rely on to drive hardware sales.

And honestly, if they just re-released the Wii U versions of WWHD and TPHD on Switch without upgrading them to 60 fps, I wouldn’t be interested at all. The physics in these games are unfortunately tied to the 30 fps framerate, so updating them to 60 fps would be a lot of work, like they did with Skyward Sword HD. I think people sometimes underestimate how much work even a remaster actually is.

Nintendo is never going to upgrade both of these games to 60 fps and bundle them together. And I also just can’t see them selling these as separate $70 releases without bringing the games up to a more modern standard. In 2016 TPHD was already kind of outdated. We are in 2026 now.

I think this generation will get modern remakes of OOT and MM. If the OOT remake really comes this year, I just don't think Nintendo would not do Majora's Mask in the same engine.

It's possible to play Wii U games through Cemu on Switch under Linux, however the best I could find is a test result that WWHD works well with full OC on Mariko at the start of the game. Outside of that, I don't know.

I don't see any way how a WW remaster could evolve beyond the Wii U one when even the original looked timeless. Twilight Princess though, that game could use some work in regards to modernisation; the Wii U remaster looks pretty horrible when blown out to high resolution, as geometry is stuck optimised for low resolutions (so why not force 480p ).

I would have to eat my shoe on livestream if they don't according to a Reddit comment I made in 2021 so yes they will definitely come out.

Hmm it's like Metroid 2/3, it would be nice to have them both in one pack too...
But I dont know about Wind Waker HD because the game is available with the Nintendo Online on the gamecube section...
So it might not be a priority for Nintendo for now.

That's not true, it's an emulated version of WW GCN than WWHD.

I was talking about "the released of Wind Waker HD on switch" because there is a gamecube version available with Nintendo Online... even if it's not the better port, Nintendo might just leave it like this lol

I don’t know, but to be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Switch versions of TPHD and WWHD sitting in Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto.

Nintendo is in such a strong position thanks to the Switch that they can afford to take their time and ‘wait’ for the right moment, or until they have a gap in their schedule.

The right moment isn’t necessarily ‘the right moment’ for gamers, but rather ‘the right moment for Nintendo’.

The problem is that Wind Waker is already on the NSO, and sooner or later we’ll have an app for Wii games, so TP will inevitably be included.

And with a Twilight Princess PC port on the horizon it's less important to see this game get released on the Switch or Switch 2. I'm just speculating but I wouldn't be too surprised to see a Wind Waker Port come out after a few years.

I was surprised they didn't release TPHD + SSHD as a bundle. If they didn't release TPHD back then, they might not have any intention to. That was the right time to release it. But who knows, they could still release them as a bundle, just like they released SMG1+SMG2 after SMG1 was already released as part of 3D All-Stars.

WWHD doesn't have any relation to the other two, it probably wouldn't be released as a bundle, so there's no incentive to port it specifically, it'll just be "when the time is right", which who knows when that is, it could be 2 generations from now.

I dunno about that, they might not release Wii games on NSO just because they would not work in handheld mode.

It has been about 13 years since Wind Waker HD released on the Wii U, but original WInd Waker is available on NSO. So, Nintendo's likely not planning a re-release of the HD version. They'll probably hang onto it until they have a hook, something that'll make consumers want to pick it up over just playing the NSO version. A bundle, a different way to play, an extra mode, an exclusive Amiibo (are they still doing those?), etc. Something that guarantees some attention from the fanbase.

Also, I didn't know an OOT remake was rumored. With that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is considering a Wind Waker remake a few years down the line.
