The second Mario Movie was always going to be dicey because it'd put the first movie into perspective. Was the first one really as good as the hype? Is the sequel more of the same, or do they push the envelope on character and story? Is everything just an excuse to make tons of references?

I was hoping Illumination would go the extra mile because "just another Mario Movie" would dilute the brand and set the series back. A bit of emotion, a good moral lesson, and adherence to lore would go a long way, in my opinion.

Was similiar for the first one:

I've seen the trailers. I think it's funnier than the first one, and even lighter in the way battles are done. ^_^

I recommend making your own individual judgement instead of relying on scores.

If you found the first movie kinda dull, you're gonna find this one even more duller, but if you're in for the action and fanservice oriented chaos, you're probably gonna enjoy it.

This right here is why video games cannot make good movies, they're only in it for the cash grabs.

I loved the movie, it had a lot of nice cameos from other games, I want to see the movie this past Friday, at 9:30pm and the movie was full of people (most people were around my age, some a bit younger and others even older, no kids at all), that never happens, especially since a more expensive screening (larger screen, vip seats and other extras).

My session barely had people on it, but to be fair I picked the most unconventional time possible on purpose. I hate watching movies full of people😅

If I watched in a usual time I don't doubt there would be more people on it. In fact, when I looked at the website to buy the tickets, that was the case for other sessions.

There's quite the disconnect between the critics and the audience when it comes to these sort of movies. As I read elsewhere on the internet, the Mario movie is meant to be a celebration of Mario. It was not made for the purpose of winning awards.

Critics just seem to hate everything that isn't a 10/10. They have no room for decent movies/games/shows. If it's not amazing, it's shit. They probably get jaded from having to review so much stuff.

I haven't seen it yet, but I like the setting. First one was decent enough. Not expecting any big surprises, just more of the same, but that's OK. At least they aren't pumping them out at the rate that Sonic the Hedgehog movies are getting pumped out, those are starting to feel repetitive.

I definitely liked this one more than the first. Especially the R.O.B. cameo.

My prediction is that the third movie will be called "The Super Mario Land Movie" and will have Wario.

Probably have Tatanga as well, which would be the first time he's even referenced in what, three decades?

So I just came back from watching this film with family, overally I'd say if you enjoyed the first film you'll probably enjoy this, which I did.

The only real negatives I felt was that I think they should have removed/reworked certain franchise references because that not only basically spoiled what was going to happen plot wise but also took away some of the potential impact/'fun' some other references may have had to me.

The last paragraph probably reads weird, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers and I'm struggling to convey my feelings, I suppose 'less is more' is one way to describe them.

That said, my parents who have very little familiarity with the games still enjoyed it.
