Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

This just makes me wonder if a Switch 2 price hike may also be coming.

Originally I was going to wait, but since I can get 20% off right now it's making me wonder whether to get it sooner.

Third price increase = Word War Three incoming trust me guys

Wait, does this mean HL3 is also confirmed?

But seriously, the Pro is over $1000 with a drive and taxes now?! I don't think I'll be able to afford a PS6 at this rate.
Hey, at least they didn't increase the price of the PSVR2 or the 3 games for it.

Despite the fact I still have zero interest in the PlayStation 5, this is harsh.

Someone just give me the freaking needle, I will GLADLY pop this stupid artificial intelligence bubble for you. I'll even do it with a shit eating grin on my face as I do it. I need a pretty large needle though, all of mine are too small for this.

It's clear the elite epstein class (republican or democrat) don't want everyday people to have access to unrestricted local AI. They want inference locked behind API gates they control, not running on your own hardware.

To do this they have stop all general purpose compute basically. This is why trying to pass laws stopping linux too and raising prices of all compute devices including consoles (people put linux on them left and right)

And this isn't a new playbook, look at investment banking in the US. It's explicitly two-tiered. You need $1M in net assets just to qualify as an accredited investor and access the same deals institutions get. Everyone else is "protected" from the only way to make money on the market these days.

Definitely should get one for 20% off. It's only going to go up.

Boy, am I glad my older consoles + older pc games keep me happy. I have zero interest in the PS5, my PS4 Pro hasn't been used in a while too. I just use play my giant backlog of PS3 and PS2 games (and PSP!) because as a kid I thought those consoles were awesome, but I just had a Gamecube. 10 years ago I bought a PS2 and still haven't managed to play all of the cool games. No $650 needed. That thing cost me 20 bucks at a thrift store, and the games were dirt cheap too.

My dude, I used to be able to buy microSD cards in bulk just because they were so disposable.

Now I need to dumpster dive for them.

About a month ago I was digging through an old drawer and found a brand new Sandisk 128GB mSD, at the time I just thought 'nice'...now it's more 'oh thank God'.

To put it another way, my R36S handheld retro system cost me £22, to buy a (reputable) 128GB mSD now could cost more than the unit itself, fortunately I had a spare one lying around.
