It's that time of year again. Sony has just rolled out a new system software update 4.93 for the PlayStation 3, continuing its long tradition of stability updates for the legacy console. While the release notes say that "By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.", its main role is to refresh the Blu-ray encryption keys, keeping disc playback compatible with newer releases.

As usual, don't update your systems until the new CFW/HEN version is released.

Very cool of Sony to still support this. It's a pain hooking up anything modern to an older TV without sacrificing quality.

And here I though they halted manufacturing on those media
Nope. They're still printing PS3, PS4 and PS5 games so 25GB, 50GB and 100GB blurays are all being made.

And blurays are the only official way to watch a lot of stuff even today.

talk about beating a dead horse! who the fuck still watches blu ray on a disc?! :rofl2:
Who ever did? I mean 🏴‍☠️DivX/Xvid/x264/h265/MP4/MKV🏴‍☠️ during that whole generation (and beyond). Bought blank media and eventually hard drives, but paid $0 for Blurays/Netflix. 😎

Kinda amazing $ony is still updating the Blu-Ray player.
Still amazing they are trying to protect content on Bluray discs. If they'd stop doing that, they wouldn't need to continue issuing updates.

The blank media, yes. Bluray content will be produced for many years to come. I mean DVDs debuted in 1996 and are STILL being released 30 years on!

Nothing but useless Blu-ray updates to which the AACS protection can be bypassed with CFW. Who even uses their PS3 to play Blu-rays anymore? Probably collectors. Sony should already stop providing updates to these consoles just like what Nintendoes to the 3DS & Wii U.

The BluRay protection plan is a joke. Especially nowadays. Still, since the PS3 is an certified player its kind of impressive Sony is still keeping it usable.
I wonder how many units are still been used as BluRay players?

So... Just don't update the PS3 until CFW 4.93 is out otherwise nothing changes?
Evilnat 4.93 just dropped, and HEN was already available last week. Safe to update to those. Just don't accidentally install OFW because bgtoolset isn't compatible yet.
