As you all know, the switch 1 was hacked wide open very close to its launch. Now, 8+ years on, we may have a skewed idea of how fast all of that really happened.

I wanted to visualize this, so I did some digging to remind myself of the timeline of those events.

We are currently at day 152 post launch of the switch 2. To contextualize some things for you:

Arbitrary code execution for switch 1: 272 days post launch
Boot rom exploit in the wild: 396 days post launch
SXOX launch: 472 days post launch
Atmosphere release: 593 days

When those dates would occur post switch 2 launch if it followed the same timeline:

Arbitrary code execution for switch 1: March 5, 2026
Boot rom exploit in the wild: July 6, 2026
SXOX launch: September 20, 2026
Atmosphere release: January 19, 2027

Now obviously, we were given a big gift by Nintendo for the last system because there was an unpatchable 0 day exploit in the OG switch tegras - a gift which is probably a once in a lifetime event. It's unclear if and when the switch 2 will be hacked, but I thought it was interesting to visualize the comparison.

Edit: we already missed one milestone, switch 1 carts were dumped and available online 138 days post launch, that would have been October 21, 2025 for switch 2.

we live in a hyper quickening. with quantum internet and other things coming down the pipe the whole concept of time nowadays is moot imo.

interesting visualization graph though. nice work.

No mention of the pegaswitch exploit that was instrumental to the Switch hacking in its early days

Mar 14, 2017
what did pegaswitch allow, or how was it instrumental?

Was it mostly used to poke around and try to figure other things out? Because best I see it was a webkit exploit with limited functionality (certainly no kernel access)

I don't think anything was actually possible or developed until recovery mode was exploited

Exactly that , it was used to poke around in the very early days of the switch
It was the first way I know of that you could run nro's, so you could indeed run unsigned code

Pegascape/fake news later on allowed access to the recovery mode and full-blown cfw on fw 4.1 and below without the need for hardware modification even on patched units

I'm sorry, but this thread is stupid. Things don't work that way. I'm the first one who wants to have the Switch 2 hacked, but it's very unlikely that something on the level of Fusee will happen in the short/medium term. Even if a software exploit is achieved, Nintendo only has to change the encryption keys.

The switch 2 will eventually be hacked, but it's more likely to happen at the end of its useful life when there will be no more releases or new firmware, so any software level exploit would be enough.

Since you didn't bother to read the first post I will repost it for you

I kind of hope the Switch 2 isn't hacked for a long time (3, maybe 4 years), just so there's plenty of exploitable units out in the wild and aren't hard to come by when it eventually gets a modchip.
I'm also curious how much more the toxicity and dumb excuses will increase the longer folks can't emulate and/or pirate exclusive Switch 2 games (which is actually happening rn as I type this out).

Yikes, my bad

Arbitrary code execution milestone missed.
most likely yes, but at the same time

we didn't know that arbitrary code execution was achieved on that day - only a few people knew that at the time

more worrying is how far we have come without a switch 2 cart being dumped

The fact that there is zero news or even a hint of active work on Switch 2 after almost a year seem pretty damning ngl.

What should we be doing to be in the right position when a hack arrives? - I bought my switch 2 about 1 month after launch. Every game I play now ask's me to update or launch. I usually go for launch but yesterday my son selected up when playing Mario Kart.

Should we be avoiding all updates?

Unless you want a really expensive paperweight, just update and enjoy the games.
