this is doable but someone would probably need to use this old 2009 iPhone version there are links to get the app on archive.org

i mean I'm no app/game dev but i doubt there's much different techwise in an old crappy iphone and a 3ds

Here's the rundown:

iPhone 3GS (released in 2009) had a 600MHz single-core ARM processor with a PowerVR SGX535 GPU, which supports up to OpenGL ES 2.1 (including shaders). It had 256MiB of ram.

The 3DS had a 268 MHz dual-core ARM11 CPU, and a 134MHz ARM9 CPU for backwards compatibility with the OG DS. The GPU was a PICA200, which had only OpenGL ES 1.1 support with no shader compatibility. It had 128MiB of ram.

Only one ARM11 core can be used for the game (the other is reserved for the system), and it is apparently very hard to use the ARM9 CPU alongside the ARM11 one, meaning that using both could make it even slower. Also, only half of the ram could be used for games (a little bit more in HiMEM mode), as the rest was reserved for the OS.

So, the OG 3DS was indeed slower than an iPhone of that era. This was likely done to reduce battery usage. Maybe the faster CPU and additional ram of the New 3DS could have made a difference, but I'm not sure it'd be enough.

Looking it up, even the Zeebo was a bit more powerful than the OG 3DS, with a faster processor (we don't know much about its GPU). The New 3DS was faster than the Zeebo, though.
