A 13-year-old boy named Willis Gibson has become the first person to ‘beat’ the NES version of Tetris, 34 years after it originally released back in 1989. He played the game so perfectly for so long that it forced a kill screen that crashed the game, not a formal ending, as there isn’t officially one. He even live streamed the whole event.

if it always crashes at exactly the same point, i'll let it count. then it would be the same as the end of pac man. but can't that also be a random crash?

Could you at least watch the video before asking what is already answered? It's not exactly random, but also not exactly or necessarily in the same time/spot. The first chance to crash was some levels earlier, but he missed it. On that particular stage, clearing it required to get a single line to complete the stage, but he accidentally got a triple. He was both skillful and lucky as hell, to continue long enough to reach this particular crash.

As much as I can respect that take, we need to remember the limited hardware this game is running on. The kid maxed out both the score and the top score, and that likely triggered a crash from running out of memory, registers, or whatever.

there's no reason for your excitement buddy. the video shows a child getting gasping for breath after tetris freezes. i watched the video, at least the last minute. if there's a technical explanation before that, i'm glad you took the time to watch 40 minutes and were willing to share your expertise.

Well, it looks like the video here wasn’t the one I was referring to anyway. If you’re really interested in the info, this video is quite good:

This is like 10 times what was considered the human limit years ago. The game was expected to have a kill screen like 1/7 into this run. This is truly winning classic Tetris.

There is technically no way to finish Tetris. If you go to screen 255 and after that. It starts from the first level.

Kid is incredible. Cool as a cucumber. I couldn´t even watch as fast as he could clear those lines.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!
Yes! What's amazing also is to see him looking over at another screen sometimes, assuming his streaming chat, also while playing even. Talented to say the least.

I wonder why people use NES Tetris for competition over using Gameboy Tetris, which is far superior. To my knowledge, GB Tetris doesn't crash, it just goes on forever after level 9, at level 9 drop speeds until the player gameovers.

Isn’t there a mode that has an ending?

Due to limitations of the NES's memory, they seem to have not put an ending into the game. But this was in the 1980's where technology was very limited as to what we have today.

congratulations to this kid I guess but not to be that person but no one really knows who the first person was, if there was one I’ll say it like that, there was no real internet back in the day to post something like this. Still there was a way to record but who really was recording gameplay back than.

That particular reply (and video) was to someone talking about GB version though. And with regards to NES Tetris, I don't think that's an excuse at all. It was simply lazy programming, because they never envisioned anybody ever getting that far.

Reading in to the history of competitive Tetris I don't think their was evidence of anyone even getting to level 30 until 2010.

While nothing is impossible it seems unlikely given the most competitive players in the world could get no where near to doing the above only a decade ago. The techniques allowing people to even progress that far are pretty recent discoveries it seems.
