It's one of the few systems which I haven't used before. Are there any good exclusives on it? Is it worth using actual hardware over an emulator? Will one I buy online be hackable? Is there a particular motherboard revision to look for?

I prefer almost any option over PC emulation, like if I want to play a DS game I set up my 3DS or Wii U or PSX I use my vita. Similar if I want to play a PSP or Vita game despite emulation now being easier. Though I can't say this is like a real improvement, I just like hardware over sitting at my desk. I can't speak for what little exclusives remain. I think the MGS 2 and 3 releases are cool.

From vita.hacks.guide:

"all PS Vita, PS Vita Slim, and PS TV devices in all regions on firmware 1.03 to 3.74". And 3.74 is the latest. I don't think you have to worry outside of picking the right option on the guide.

almost unplayable....until you hack it. that's the way I saw the vita from the early days of 3.18 and 3.20. all systems are exploitable, but not all can use enso. you only have to worry about full cfw (enso) f buying a system in Japan though. all pstv's regardless of region can install enso. that thing was discontinued fast as fuck. haha

Not so much exclusives on vita but a nice hardware to run emulators.
Can play up to PS1 games, and of course PSP and PS Vita games.
All model can be hacked, but recommend to get a 2000 model (micro usb charging port & 1GB internal storage)

I liked the Vita a lot but I have to admit I switched to PSTV rather fast due to cheaper memory and because playing on a big screen is nice even though sometimes the small portable option isn't bad either.

Sadly the PSTV can't handle all the games that well even though you can whitelist some games that aren't supposed to run on it but they will be rather slow.

I can honestly say - If you looking to play a game and get the feeling the dev wanted you to have - There's no better option than using real hardware. Emulation has come on a long way over the last year or two, but can never really give you the same play as holding the hardware in your hand and running it as the dev meant it to be played. As for which one - I'd go OLED with the vita 1000 model as the screen is just that much better over the LCD, and the battery can be upgraded to a larger one with minimal change to the case. I've done the mod and here is a great video about the results of it "" .
I've owned all 3 models, slim, original and the TV, and I'd stay away from the TV as there are multiple situations where lack of a touch screen will not let you play the game. And the patches they did latter are still rubbish in my opinion.
The homebrew scene is very active and has a big fan base that are very helpful for any problem you come across or something you might want to try etc. Also the library is massive now and grows by the day.. I've been shocked at what this system (that was well ahead of its time) can do. The PKGJ app will let you get the whole library of vita for EUR,JPN,USA as well as PSP and some PSX. I filled a 200GB card up in no time and I'd like a 512 ;)
So to sum it up - This is a great system that is small enough to pop in a pocket, large enough to see great GFX on it and powerful enough to run games that do really look great ! I think you'll be happy with it and even if you wasn't the vita has been holding its price well. So can always sell if not for you. But I think you'll soon forget that idea after using it... Happy Gaming !!

I heard vita emulation on pc is hard to get working, I don't know if they had fixed any problems yet but the original hardware is the best way to all the vita games. The main barrier to entry is definitely the prices because they can definitely be on the more pricey side, and I wouldn't recommend getting any physical games because prices like that is borderline criminal. Hacking a vita is what really makes it shine, emulation on the vita is beautiful and super easy to do and shouldn't take more than 30 mins to an hour, and for vita exclusive games gravity rush is a no brainer and some games just play better on the vita like Persona 4 Dancing All Night. If you end up buying a vita it will keep you gaming for a long time, and a personal opinion of mine is that the vita is the most comfortable handheld every. Hope this helped with your decision making! :3

yeah, a hacked vita is probably the best handheld I've ever owned. unhacked, the system is almost unplayable due to restrictions, so if that factors into your decision, whether to hack or not, remember this. ;)

That and the huge amount of support it gets with updates and ports. The hardware also really holds up well, esp the 1000 with the Hall Effect joysticks, OLED and generally perfect build quality. Feels like a real premium device.

The only thing that could make it better is native res PSP which I'm still hoping is possible. That said the old games play far better on Vita due to more memory, increased bus speed etc but it would be nice to see them running like PPSSPP on that screen.

I barely used mine unhacked beyond its exclusives but once the modders resurrected it a few years ago I played it quite a lot. In terms of retro like arcade you really can't beat it as the image, controls, ease etc all line up perfectly.

I bought mine about a year back and I've enjoyed it. I have A PCH-1000 I got used and there's been a lot of fun games to play on road trips. I did have some issues with Retroarch save data, but other than that, definitely a great console and I'd recommend getting it if the games you can play interest you.
