I'm asuming the firmware.nds you got is supposed to be the main IPL for the original DS and DS Lite. You can run it, it won't fuck anything up, other than MAYBE your DS-mode profile which you can easily fix.

Look at this thread from the beginning, and tell me why it doesn't work (you'll understand later)

That's not an error, it's a warning. That's perfectly normal.
Just press Y to run the firmware you're trying to run, it should be fine.
Most likely though it'll just take you through the DS Lite's initial setup (which only affects the clock and DS mode profile) then reboot.

But once I confirm it still won't let me

You see? I had already confirmed but it tells me to put the file in the root (I already put it and it still doesn't work

I am trying to change the name of the file to "firmware.nds"
(for my convenience I had called it 1.nds)

Try putting it in sd:/_nds/ntrldr, it seems to have been changed to there, maybe updating the error was forgetten:
[...] firmware.nds is expected to be in the root of the partition /_nds/ntrldr [...]

Edit: also yeah, definitely rename it to firmware.nds, if something asks for a file called firmware.nds there's a very low chance it'll work with 1.nds lol

I don't have that folder, I create it?

In twilight menu I don't see the _nds folder...

Ok what I am going to try is to run the file from the root but there is a copy of the file in D:/_nds_ntrldr

TWiLight Menu++ hides the _nds folder, you're not supposed to be running firmware.nds though. You're supposed to be running ntrldr.nds, which goes wherever you put ROMs.
I'm on the right track. Has changed!

How do I solve it?
I just tried and this worked for me:
  1. Download NTRLDR
  2. Extract ntrldr.7z, extract ntrldr.zip inside that, and copy ntrldr.nds wherever you put ROMs on your 3DS SD card
  3. Download firmware.nds, I can't help you with this as per site rules but it was very easy to find
  4. Copy firmware.nds to sd:/_nds/ntrldr/firmware.nds
  5. Run NTRLDR from TWiLight Menu++

No download link works
Edit: I found it on github
Re edit: No, I didn't find it...
