Boss of Xbox discusses the idea of implementing cross-platform account bans

In recent times, Xbox has been a major part of cross-platform play becoming more of a standard. Phil Spencer, the CEO of Xbox, has made it no secret that he wants to see gamers across all consoles, whether it's Nintendo, Sony, PC, or Xbox, all play together. However, online play isn't the only thing he might want the platforms to share. In an interview with the New York Times, Phil Spencer discussed the concept of the "metaverse" and toxic communities in the gaming space.

In regards to harassment, Spencer had an idea for a solution: cross-platform bans. He noted that it would be difficult to pull off, but having players be banned from one service and then subsequently others, would reduce bad behavior online.

Something I would love us to be able to do--this is a hard one as an industry--is when somebody gets banned in one of our networks, is there a way for us to ban them across other networks?

A secondary concept he considered was having a "blocked user list" that would carry over from Xbox Live to PlayStation Network, and everything in between, easily allowing for users to avoid harassment across all platforms. Currently, Microsoft is working on an AI that can monitor game chats, and can even detect when conversations begin to "get to a destructive point".

and that's why i use different accounts (even emails) as main accounts on different systems and never put accounts on hacked consoles ever since the ps4 9.0 hax i did a reinit on my ps4 Just in case before hacking it to remove my psn accout

So that's why you use different accounts? So you can get away with harassment? Because that is what this topic is actually about.

I dont think people should be banned from online play. Just give each person a individual block list with no limit to how many people you can add where if you block someone, they will no longer pair up with you in matchmaking unless you unblock them.

Is harassment going to be the new "think of the children" for [engage do not question mode] among the terminally worried about others having fun crowd?
It sounds like you have some deviant ideas about what constitutes "having fun." Are you blissfully unaware of the harassments, or are you one of the harassers?

I think you just filled in my accused of random maldoings bingo card for this week. Did not think I was going to win that one.

Whether or not bans would be for harassment specifically or hacking or anything rule breaking, the worst part is because it's all going to be automated by an AI. It makes an error? Oops there goes your 20 year old account on Xbox Live and Steam and even if you wanna move to another platform in protest, whoops, you're banned on PSN.

Of course, the chances of this actually happening, like Spencer said, are astronomically low. But still. It's a very weird and alarming idea to just toss out there.

I like how they want to do crossplatform bans but crossplatform multiplayer is still nonexistent for most games.
I am not a fan of centralization and I am definitely not a fan of this. If someone gets banned for hacking their switch, they shouldn’t get banned from their modified XBox/PS. I get that they want to deal with toxic players across multiple platforms but this just seems like it’s going to cause more problems.

Not sure if it's even possible, and if it somehow even is in the future, the backlash would be major. Not like I use online myself either way, but it's still a bad idea.

Only banning them just from other videogame platforms? Just that?
Take it up a notch, ban them from their PayPal accounts, put them in the federal offender lists, revoke their citizenships, take away their passports and driver licenses, freeze their bank accounts, downgrade their social credit score!

...sure this world is getting dystopic...

Don't worry, big tech is working on that one, they're trying their best to get rid of anonymity.
yeah it seems microsoft wants information on people gaming accounts from other platforms for some reason, seems very fishy.

Imagine loosing your head and cursing in COD in your xbox and getting banned, then you want to relax and play some mario kart and nintendo bans you because you cursed on a COD game on the xbox?... makes absolutely no sence this logic.

I’ve got an even more controversial idea:
Segregation

Put the trash people only with the other trash people, and delete the accounts after X amount of inactivity

And put the people who aren’t ban worthy together, maybe a little rehab group for the notably bad but not terrible people.

How’s that sound? Pretty bad, but not as bad as bringing up the concept of the Metaverse and then talking about cross platform banning. Why stop there? Why not just remove their internet access at that point if you don’t want them coming back.

There’s better ways to handle this… I can see where they’re coming from, but this isn’t the way to go about things
