my switch is currently on 11.0.1 can i update atmosphere to 1.1.1 from 0.18.1?
what are some downside (for both switch and atmosphere) if i upgrade the switch to 13?
can the latest game still be played on 11.0.1 version? if not is there a way to patch them to work on 11.0.1?

Depends on why you want to update, there is no real downside that can't be fixed.

Well there are a handful of games that can´t be patched out there, but nothing bad yet. I am on 11.0 and enjoying until the last moment. Yes you can patch the majority of new titles, but sooner or later, all the newer games will come in a new format that, as far as I can tell, can't be patched anymore. But until then, there is no rush to update, just missing a couple of titles and the native bluetooth audio on the latest update.

Are you using EmuMMC or SysMMC?
In my case since I have EmuMMC I updated mine to FW13 with the latest Atmosphere and Keeping my SysMMC at FW 10.1.

There's small downside if you're update to FW13 like some homebrews will not work that's about it.

is there a guide on how to patch games to work with lower fw?

i'm still on 11.0.1 but i update atmosphere regularly just to be in touch with hb scene. I rarely play any switch games and see no reason to update fw before i really have to. But you know, it takes a minute to update and there are basically no downsides (almost) , so its up to you.

Once the scene updates the major homebrews, there's really no reason to stay on a previous version. Not just this time, but with every new version released.

At this point, the only difference it makes is the bluetooth audio support. Newer games like Metroid Dread run fine for me in firmware 11, so for now it's not necessary to update for the sake of having game support. I'm happy not going to version 13 for now.

If you do update, remember to BACK UP YOUR NAND FIRST, just in case. Better to have a backup and not need it than to need one and not have it.

Here's a couple of guides to do that:

what do you use to install game? im currently using awoo and nsusbloader and i think these arent updated yet to support fw 13?
Awoo works on 13. It howled to me a few days back because my little chica got fed up with Treasure Tracker.
And I'm on latest versions of everything.

I update once every a new original game is released, so, not often.

As I purchased Metroid Dread, I didn't want to figure out how to make the cart work on 13. I don't think it is even possible.
