I'm assuming it's still not safe to hack a switch without getting banned yet, but I thought I might as well ask. I only wanted to use it for homebrew and I was wondering if that made a difference. Like, if you don't pirate anything are you safe?

I've had homebrew on my launch-model Switch (with emuMMC) for years now, and still haven't been banned, so...that's my experience, anyway.

Can you link to guide that shows how to do this?
This is a pretty decent guide for first-time homebrew setup - https://switch.homebrew.guide/
As for emuMMC, once you've got Hekate and Atmosphere set up, there's a giant button on the Hekate boot menu labelled "emuMMC", and it's very straightforward. Just make sure you've got ~32GB unallocated on your microSD card for optimal results.

Ok, thanks for the help!

hello, Im still new, so i have a question for this. with it back up would you be able to "unban" with a restore ? is that the point of it ? i have a back up already but just didn't quite understand the reason.

It’s impossible to unban yourself

the backup is vital in case you somehow brick your switch it will always allow you to repair it

Nice to read this! But did you use online with your emuMMC? thanks!
Ive had a launch model switch without emmc(never even used emunand) and it hasn’t been banned either

just don’t pirate and install stupid shit. Always use homebrew through app redirection so they only see you entering/playing normal games and only use basic homebrew(like save backups)

But at this rate, why bother hacking your Switch? Just for save backups?

I have an FTP server watching my switch for new/updated save files and automatically backs them up to one drive for me

I’m not paying Nintendo for cloud saves lol

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Emulation, Android/Lakka/Linux, Homebrew ports (like gzdoom/quakespasm/gta/half-life etc.), overclocking, sys-modules, the list goes on...
This too there is more to homebrew than just piracy

Really not losing anything by keeping your sysNAND 100% unmodified and using an emuNAND to install anything CFW

Either keep the emuNAND offline, use 90DNS or better still block the servers in Atmosphere instead: https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/extras/blocking_updates/

Atmosphere also now includes a serial blanking feature but never tried that as I’d already wiped it with Incognito (which I wouldn’t recommend at this point) - did all this about a year ago and no issues so far playing online on the sysMMC and doing what I like with the emu
