So I saw that the mobile ports of Sonic 1/2 got decompiled. I feel like it might not really be worth it, or practical at all since we have different ports to 3DS anyways, but would this ever come to 3DS? I have no programming knowledge, I just feel like this would definitely be something cool once the community picks up on it and creates mods and such.

And why exactly would it not run on the 3DS? the 3DS already have some fancy versions of sonic with stereoscopic 3D and stuff.
I don't see any reason why this could not run well on there.. Sonic is after all not a very demanding game. heck even my iPod Nano from ancient times can run sonic..

It's very possible - in fact, it's already sitting there. Rubberduckycooly ported RSDKv3 and v4 to SDL 1.2 already, specifically mentioning Dreamcast, Wii and 3DS as targets.
With that said, the 3D Classics versions are very solid, so yes, it's probably a hard sell to port them. But if we could get Sonic CD, that would be more than worthwhile. And it may naturally allow a similar process to port the S1 and S2 versions later. The justification would simply be for widescreen, 60FPS, Tails and Knuckles, speed cap control, Hidden Palace Zone, etc.

I know it wont happen, but I think it would be nice to see Sonic Mania on the Saturn. Considering that Mania was from what I’ve read inspired by the idea of a 32bit era 2D Sonic game.

I dream of somebody making a Sonic 1, 2 or CD port for the Old 3DS or Wii U, but I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

The Wii U is not a popular console and the Old 3DS is harder to work because it is weaker.

Dreamcast?, Wow, seeing a port of that for Dreamcast would be just incredible, especially since the Sega Genesis emulator for Dreamcast is not so good.

The 3DS Classics are still emulation at the end of the day, which are laggy and not the best sound quality. The ports are native recreations with minimal lag, full widescreen, remastered audio better than the original, zero slowdown from the original (especially S1), minor physics bugs fixed, smooth special stages, and extra features like tails flight assist, knuckles, and hidden palace zone. Its been a travesty these versions of S1/2 have been trapped on mobile for so long and the more consoles we get them on the better.

Sonic definitely isn't demanding, and it's not like every feature has to be implemented. Touchscreen selection would be good, and 800px mode doesn't seem like it would be super resource intensive. Doom, Duke3D, Quake, and Quake II have ports and those are definitely more intensive games than Sonic 1/2/CD. I definitely think these ports would run well on 3DS, but probably best on N3DS

The native 3DS versions are so amazing that it really doesn’t matter does it? Sonic CD would be nice though.
They're competent conversions of the Genesis originals. However, there are a number of major enhancements that the mobile ports had that the 3DS versions don't. One is true widescreen (3DS is a letterboxed 4:3). The special stages are also visually upgraded with much smoother animation.

Rings have more frames of animation, and there are probably some other small enhancements like this that I missed too. These are more minor though.

The mobile port of Sonic 2 also includes an extra secret stage that was cut from the final version before release- Hidden Palace (completely different from the S3&K version). It's accessed in Mystic Cave by falling down a hole that was previously a pit of obnoxious spikes.

It also has knuckles too. :P

But to be clear... Hope this helps. Not trying to tell anyone here what they should do, just share differences. You all can decide how you prefer to play based on the knowledge and no way is the wrong way. :)

2013 mobile ports

The big changes
  • Widescreen view (Is obvious but it also helps make the game easier by seeing more ahead)
  • Consistent 60FPS All the time
  • Special stages also 60FPS
  • Sonic With Tails (Can command tails to fly and you can grab him just like sonic 3 but without second player)
  • Tails alone
  • Knuckles alone
  • All have super forms (No tails don't have flickies birds)
  • Elemental shields (and insta-sheild from sonic 3)
  • FUTURE MOD SUPPORT (With the use of the porting method currently discussed in this topic) :P
The smaller ones
  • Stages have been altered a bit to make use of tails & knuckles' abilities hiding alternative paths and monitors
  • Higher Quality music (maybe subjective)
  • No ground or air speed cap (Is a technical thing. Originally if you was holding right when over speed cap, you'll instantly be returned to the speed cap. Both on ground and in air
  • Spindash added
  • Additional items in debug mode (mostly unused content found from prototypes and other sources)
  • Time attack mode
  • Achievements

  • TWO PLAYER ONLINE *citation needed* (Only three zones and special stage in versus mode originally, but this version has more zones to play on, knuckles is also playable and online officially. Not yet to be possible with currently discussed porting method)
  • NEW STAGE HIDDEN PALACE ZONE ADDED (But you must search Mystic Cave Zone act 2 to find it) :ninja:

  • No air speed cap (Is a technical thing. Just like described already, but only applied to air in sonic 2 for some reason)
  • Option for random monitors in single player
  • Additional items in debug mode (mostly unused content found from prototypes and other sources)
  • Time attack mode
  • Boss Rush mode
  • Achievements

CD has been ported to Wii U, I've got and it works great. https://github.com/Clownacy/Sonic-CD-11-Decompilation/releases
Make sure the SonicCD folder with the needed assets is in the root of your SD folder.

Word is 1 and 2 are being worked on for Wii U as well, but don't quote me on that. Wish Sonic 3 AIR weren't closed source, that should totally be on Wii U as well. I'd love if all Genesis era Sonic games saw proper widescreen HD releases on Wii U.

If you are talking about the Sega 3D Classics on 3DS, you are simply wrong. These are not emulated and were remade to add 3D. There is no emulation taking place at all. They are also not laggy in the least, nor do they have sound problems. But then I use a New 3DS XL which is not only faster, but has the best sound quality of any 3DS/2DS system.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
