I agree there is no lag in those titles on the 3DS, but I remember reading an interview with the M2 guys and they said they pretty much made a custom genesis emulator for the 3DS that plays the games like a genesis game without issue, but also outputs in 3D which requires customizing the rom for proper output. So I believe it is in a sense emulation, but it's not just simply throwing an old rom on the 3DS either. This virtual Sega 3D system that gets emulated became known as the Sega Gigadrive.

The specialized emulation system is called the Gigadrive and a member here broke down how the system works.

It has minimum 1 extra frame of lag because its an emulator and they don't have the resources for run-ahead. Whether you personally notice the lag or not doesn't change that fact.

The remastered audio tracks are higher quality than a real genesis could produce so again its something no emulator can best. Although some might prefer the original sound for nostalgia. (Although really M2's efforts sound pretty terrible there compared to say a MISTer.)

Ah, well I do have overclock on my New 3DS all the time, so that 1 frame lag may be getting remedied with the extra clock speed.

Good luck with that, your idea of "Fun" may be very different compared to the others on the megadrive. :ninja:

Like many others, I never owned a sega cd and only played it when I borrowed a copy of Sonic Gems Collection for gamecube. At the time I was more like "Wow a new sonic game I never played before" after playing it again with the HD remake, it constantly when like "Oh, is that game again. I hope the others get HD ports especially sonic 3" which is probably weird. It was the first steam game I ever owned, and it probably had something to do with the achievements I had to get playing it, or the youtube more recent reviews of it compared to then and now.

What do I personally think? If you play it like is your first time, just getting to the end of each stage, is okay. If you trying to get the good ending, then prepare for a struggle worst than any bonus stage from the first three games. Collect 50 rings, get to end of stage, jump in the big ring and catch those ufo in the special stage to get the seven time stones before the game ends. Either that or go to the past of every act, and destroy those robot generators (and I think a hologram of metal sonic) and now I know why no one ever does a speedrun of the good ending of sonic cd.

I only played the game on iOS and recently bought the Steam version to see how it faired. Definitely frustrating trying to 100% this game, even when it's running full speed! It's a game that's always been hit or miss with me, and with all the buzz I've wanted to go back and actually fully complete it. I've beaten it without full completion, but still never gotten to the good ending. Definitely would love to do it, on the 3DS or not!

I guess a workaround for AIR would be using Linux on the 3DS/Wii U. The documentation would be there for the program would be enough to edit/mod the game to run well on the Wii U/3DS and allow for modding like the PC version. I imagine it would be complicated to do and might not run flawlessly, but it sounds like it could work as a proof of concept for the team to allow open-source or to allow a group to work on a 3DS/Wii U port. I'd love to see all the classic games in HD on the Wii U too for sure!

I never got to play them, but I can think of so many great games that could have been put in that series. Dynamite Headdy would be awesome!

    Or Beyond oasis. :ninja:

Honestly, is sega own fault. They try something new with their own classic games and then give up when they don't sell well and wonder why. I like the compilations, but every re-release of sonic is getting old and very negligible at best. Expanding the number of games is better, but they don't do much to make them worth paying for again.

Comparing sonic on android that does a lot of great things and cost as much as $3 to something on 3DS or even switch re-release costing more up to $8 where is just emulating a genesis rom modified to have spindash, dropdash, and nothing else, is just wasted potential and money. You're only paying to have it playable on different hardware. Meanwhile no one would have complained about porting the android to more consoles than a emulated genesis rom. The emulation is great, but good emulation isn't enough to get people to spend money again and again on nostalgia. More games, and new ways to play the old games will.

The best compilation sega had is sadly the sega classics collection on switch, ps4, xbox and steam. It has the most games, multi region versions (so you can play uncensored japanese versions) online multiplayer and rewind. Exclusive to steam is workshop for rom hacks and mods. If that was possible on consoles, it would made it even better, but the garbage emulation is the worst part of that entire thing.

I love that collection, I bought it a long time ago to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The one released for 360 and PS3 was pretty good too. I hope someone can make a hyper-accurate Genesis emulator before I muster up the courage and chunk of change to buy an Everdrive, though I'd probably do that regardless. I think SEGA could benefit from releasing more games for Classics Collection, since the original Steam release was kind of like buying addons for the base game.

The SEGA AGES collection is actually really good, I've bought a couple games from it and they're fantastic to play with a lot of good additions that could have people coming back. They definitely need to amp up the selection though, because the games we have now are gonna get stale since they're all arcade games, Sonic, or Phantasy Star.

They are better off doing one of three things.

    1. Making better remakes (not budgeted ones) like they tired when they first started the "Sega Ages 2500" on ps2
    2. Using that Sonic Mania game engine to make more re-releases. (They would automatically come with widescreen, 60FPS all the time, higher quality audio, online multiplayer for games supporting it) and add new content for players to actually want to buy.
    3. Add more games people actually want to see modern release of.
The first options wasn't a bad idea, but it was obviously bad cause they was remakes with extreme budgets for development and the price of the cost matched it. As old and clunky as some of of the games that they was based off, a remake would be best interest. Phantasy star HD collection, people still consider those four games worth experiencing and if they made changes to modernize it with voice acting, more story and less tedious gameplay.

Second options would have been seen like a no brainer. Considering people obviously still like the arcade or genesis games, giving them a game engine like the Enhanced HD sonic ports has would be greatly worth it. Don't want to go all in on a remake? Then just enhance the game better. Sonic 2 mobile got hidden palace zone, online 2 player race, boss attack and achievements.

Think how other series benefit from it. Gunstar heroes on 3DS had instant gun swapping which made it just as good as contra. Now fix constant slowdown and add online co-op. Maybe bonus levels, weapons or challenge modes. Streets of rage series. Now with higher quality audio, consistent 60 fps, bonus levels that could make use of unused music, new combat features, online multiplayer, and challenge modes. Extra mile could be a full localization of the uncensored Japanese Bare Knuckle 3 game where they didn't make the game harder for people outside japan on purpose.

They been constantly holding back on the games they could re-release. Like they are scared to get anything else other than Sega 16 bit arcade megadrive and master system games. I almost forgot Game Gear if it wasn't for that new tiny game gear micro or the less than 10 games on 3DS. Are they afraid to reach out to other systems like saturn, or dreamcast? What about that arcade sonic game or golden axe revenge of death adder sequel? Is just too much like avoiding what people really want. At this point, I'll even take games tha haven't been localized yet. That also seem like a popular move. (Trials of Mana and all)

This option sounds like it would be the best way to go about it, but the only issue is that unless Christian Whitehead comes back, it might be a hit or miss with in-house development. Best company to outsource to would probably still be M2 or someone of similar nature.

The least they could do is try to make a custom game engine with the use of features like the one the sonic games have. Make it easier to put games on it. Least that way, more games can be released with enhancements and at a faster rate.

I hope that happens honestly. I wonder if the community would step up to do that before SEGA though.
