Hi everybody and happy new year !

Sorry if this is a dumb qestion, but is it possible to store Wii U, Wii, Gamecube games etc. on one external hard drive ?

Ive seen older posts online, in which people claimed that its possible by using VC injections, but I couldnt find any clear nor recent answer.

If not, what is the recommended setup ? Storing Wii games on a SD card and Wii U games on a hard drive, or do I need multiple hard drives for each system ?

Also how easy is it to connect gamecube controllers to the system ? Does it support them natively via first or third party adapters ?

Im planning on buying a Wii U mainly for playing older systems easily on an hd TV and Im still comparing which system might do the best job.

you can put all games on one drive with vc injections. otherwise, you need separate drives. not sure about the gamecube controller. I have an adapter that plugs into the wiimote, and I've never had a problem with it.

Thats great to hear, thanks for the confirmation!

So is the recommended Injector for Wii and GC titles the one made by TeconMoon?

Also quick question, do I need a SD card upwards of 16gb, if all of my games are installed on an external drive, or is there any benefit to a bigger sized SD card?

not really a benefit to a larger sd card, no. yes, but I have all of my stuff on two hdds and an sd card. that injector should allow you to have everything on one hdd though, but be warned, you can only have 292 titles installed (300 if you count default stuff), but I have around 1,000 games total across all three platforms.

Oh ok, I didnt know that the Wii U had a limit on the home screen, kinda like the 3ds I guess, is there any way to install VC injections and Wii U games, without creating a shortcut on the homescreen ie. taking up space ?

Also, is the SD card still necessary as a "middle man" to transfer games to the hdd ? As far as I understood Id still have to move my game to the sd card and use WUP installer gx 2 on the Wii U to install them on the connected HDD ? With a smaller card, this process would take much longer and some games could even exceed the card size, wouldnt it ?

Sorry if Im asking too many questions , Im still very new to Wii U hacking and Ive had a hard time finding a comprehensive guide that covers the more intricate stuff in detail.

Alright I see, may I ask which method you used to fit 1000 games on your console ?
A hard drive that is formatted specifically for the Wii U will only be able to hold 300 titles. If you want more than that, you will need a second hard drive, and the games on the second hard drive will have to be loaded through homebrew or the vWii.

Sory but Im afraid I cant quite follow, like which specific app or program do you mean by ", and the games on the second hard drive will have to be loaded through homebrew"?

If I understand correctly, hacking the vWii requires a second hard drive specifically for Wii and Gamecube games, but I assume the games wont show up on the homescreen (and take up space) but will be loaded by entering the vWii mode first (or in other words using Nintendont rather than VC injections) ?

  1. Hard drive #1: Wii U titles, which includes VC and vWii VC games. Since the Wii U can only have 300 titles installed, and since the hard drive has to be formatted exclusively for the Wii U, you can only have 300 titles on it.
  2. Hard drive #2: Games used with homebrew emulators like RetroArch, games loaded using Nintendont, and games loaded using a USB loader on the vWii.

I thought you needed a separate HDD for WiiU as it encrypts the contents for use on that console only. Is it possible to use partitions on the HDD, for the Wii, NGC, and other games, or they need to be on the primary active one (first partition on the drive)?

NVM, this comment from @Lacius (thanks!) answers my questions.

IIRC you can use multiple user profiles, each one showing a different set of 300 titles on the menu. Bit of a hassle to set up though.

You can't put GameCube games on the USB though can you? AFAIK they're just forwarders but the games still have to be on a SD card?

The guy in this video is using a usb hard drive for installing wii and gamecube games, but hes using the vWii method.

Edit:

Looks like I messed up the formatting, sorry, he shows the hdd at the 24:35 mark.
