It's why I'm asking if there's been any cases of bans.
Problem is it's hard to pin down what causes the ban, in your case you would have to run CFW, Checkpoint and you would have a modified save. Does the game go online, are you restoring a clean nand after using checkpoint.

If that save goes online in some form I would be prepared to take the ban should it come, say it's a pokemon or smash save or something.

If the game is a strictly single player game and you're restoring a clean nand I would think it's fine but there's no guarantee, chances of being safe decrease if you don't restore a clean nand.

I have been connected to internet with cfw, opened homebrew channel and been connected to internet on an emunand that didn't match my sysnand full of Nsp's. That was over 3 months with no ban. However, I never played or updated an nsp connected, had error reports off and never modified any saves or anything on my sysnand. We just don't know what you can and can't do.

You take a chance of being banned doing anything, you either accept the possibility or you don't do it.

:0 did you just go online with both emunand and sysnand? Keep us posted if you get a ban

So I had set up emunand on a factory reset Switch, then I ran cfwsys and went into homebrew menu not realising I wasnt in emunand, Switch had internet connection on. After that I signed up to online, bought games, played games etc on nand, no cfw but nand was dirty by this point.

Few weeks later I had left the Switch in emunand for my son to play Mario, came home from work to find the missus had connected the emunand to internet and downloaded a system update. This emunand had completely different titleids etc from sys, plus a boat ton of nsp installed. Nothing was played while connected though, and no games were updated.

Right from the start I had error reporting off, and I'm EU so had turned off data sharing, although that's an account thing so would only be applicable to my sys with my linked account.

That was all over 3 months ago, Switch is not banned. Fully expect it to be banned but it's looking pretty unlikely as plenty have seen bans in that time on lesser timescales, also I have a clean Switch lite so I'm not bothered if it does.

Could I just use something like Incognito to prevent prodinfo writing on my main Switch and then transfer my save data from my secondary Switch to my main Switch? The game save data I want to transfer is purely single player.

Incognito would just prevent you connecting to Nintendo servers, you'd achieve the same result just deleting your internet settings and transferring locally, that would only work if the user was on both Switches otherwise the save you transferred wouldn't have a user able to access it.

Unless you have the same user on both Switches you are going to have to alter that save in some form on the clean Switch, be that checkpoint or hacdisk mount or something. If you do have the same user then just transfer the save, no need for an internet connection or homebrew, it transfers locally.

I have a question (probably a dumb one) but I've tried to find a good explanation but I couldn't.

I am thinking about what is the worst part of getting a Switch banned. Will the console be 100% useless or will I still be able to play offline games?

Other than "cannot be able to play online and connect to eshop" what I will be losing if my CFW Nintendo Switch gets banned?

Thinking of modding my JoyCon(s) with a momentary switch to enter RCM without jig. Potential ban risk? If so, how could such a mod be discovered by N?

Read the first post about the different types of bans.

Data is inconclusive but trends towards no risk.

I read, and the conclusion I got is: if I never go online, and get banned, I still only limited to not go online (but for Nintendo instead of myself). Am I right?
When you are banned, you are restricted from various Nintendo services depending on the ban. However regardless of the type of ban, you can always use non-Nintendo online based services.

Hello guys! Sorry for asking a question that may asked again and again...

May I know if any known case is that the console still get banned even if I don’t install any XCI/NSP file via CFW? I just want to edit a save and uploaded it to cloud save by Nintendo Switch Online, I have the game card on hand but want to use save editor to change the save and then online(connect to nintendo server), would nintendo can check I using a Homebrew system even all the game are not privacy?

Thank you so much!!

Save editing can lead to a ban. So it’s not recommended if your switch has internet access.

Thank you for the reply! Just wonder how Nintendo can check one of my game save is edited. I found many people selling edit game save in taobao(a Chinese eshop) and claimed that they can edit your save and upload to cloud(which mean you don’t have to flash your own console).
Is there any case that people with CFW console but no XCI/NSP installed got ban?
If nintendo can check if your system is CFW or not without any suspicious title installed, then I think it is impossible to edit the save and upload to cloud, but if the main way of nintendo to check if you are using CFW is by checking the game title installed, then I find the hope

Hi guys, thanks for all your help with everything.

I booted into SYS CFW once, without connecting to the Internet. Didn't actually do anything with it, just ended up powering it off and going back to emuMMC.
  • Should I restore my eMMC backup, in case there's anything in the error logs?
  • Where are the error logs located? I'd like to view them manually/copy them off with TegraExplorer. (I'm aware that deleting them is a ban risk.)
  • If my eMMC backup contains an older version of Horizon, does updating it again through Nintendo risk a ban?
I'm trying to follow the path least likely to receive a ban, of course.

Thanks for putting together this thread, it's extremely helpful.

You can restore an eMMC backup since you did not go online. And since as long as the backup was made before running CFW or homebrew, you do not have to worry about wiping error logs as restoring a backup is different from clearing error logs. However if it is a lower firmware than your current firmware and you updated officially, updating online again might be an issue.

Thanks for the response!

I updated officially. Not sure if the backup is at a lower firmware. I think I'm going to bite the bullet, make a backup then restore the old one, check the version, and if it's older I'll put the current one on.

I found the error log file by checking out the old dreport code, don't know how to parse it though... doesn't appear to be plain text. Any idea how to read that?
