Since the game is online only and will eventually be discontinued, there is no collectible value in having the cartridge. It's not like you'll pick it up in 20 years' for a round of retro Overwatch, the game won't work. Lowering the price point made perfect sense in this particular case. If it was a single player game that does retain value over time the complaints would be more justified.

Most MMO's do get a physical release on consoles, Overwatch was no exception and it got a physical release in every other platform, if it never had a physical release, sure, but it did get one.

On disc, which costs a few pennies to press. Cartridges are entirely different. As a result, the game is significantly cheaper than the usual retail game. It's still crappy, but it's less offensive than a download-only Wolfenstein or cartridge games that require a download to even run at all.

From what I've been reading, an 8GB cartridge should have a similar price to a bluray used for ps4 or xbox one, According to the store page, Overwatch for the switch has around 12GB, so a 16gb would card be needed. While 32GB cards cost nearly double, I don't believe that the 16GB card would be that much of an impediment.

Anyway, they did substantially decrease the price compared to other platforms, considering it includes those 3 months of Nintendo Online.

I still find the whole thing irksome.

Nobody on the planet can convince me that manfacturing a cartridge of any, even very small capacity costs anywhere near the cost of pressing a disc, which is effectively a piece of plastic with metallic film on one side and a print on the other. It's a vastly more complicated process that involves creating and cutting PCB's, soldering components, injecting plastic into cartridge shell molds, printing labels and the final assembly. Naturally the cost of "pressing a disc" also includes the cost of licensing, and that's where the final price tag for the discs comes from - the actual process of making one is ridiculously cheap. Someone's eating that cartridge cost, so if the price for developers is "equivalent" then Nintendo must've adjusted the cost of their license to offset things.

I realise this is being done to save costs on cartridge prices, but wouldn't you be able to save costs more if you didn't release a physical edition at all? Seems a little silly to me. Won't be buying it anyway, I'm participating in the Blizzard/Activision boycott.

I have a retro gaming convention coming up this weekend, and I'll be dressed as Winnie the Pooh to show my support for Hong Kong. <3

in this cases im fine with not being a cartridge, i mean the games has no offline mode so meh whats the point of the cartridge for an online only game that keeps getting updates?
