Does this require you to softmod the vwii, or can you play it on the WiiU side? I heard conflicting things from a couple people.

Does not required softmodding vWii at all.

Source: me, who wouldn't softmod vWii for the life of me and has used Retroarch on Wii U more times than I can count

Ok. I am getting a crash EVERY TIME I head to the retroarch menu on the wii u. Steps to reproduce
1.) Head to retroarch with Haxchi (I have Kirby DS Painting game)
2.) Load up NXEngine (Sometimes its already loaded)
3.) Press a home button on any controller while Cave Story has loaded
4.) Hold the power button for 3 seconds because it crashes on step 3.

What I think it Is that retroarch has a completely white background for some reason when boot it up. Doesn't change at all. So it could be missing some textures and it just decides to crash. That's all I know. There was a code dump at first but I didn't take a pic and it was saying stuff about some picture files missing. Hope theres a fix!

You need the assets folder.

How is this different for playing arcade games from the MAME emulator posted here?

I don't think there's a standalone MAME emulator for Wii U unless I am mistaken.
You are probably making reference to the Wii standalone MAME emulator.

For MAME on Wii U stick to Retroarch.

It says it's a vwii forwarder, so yeah I guess it's just the Wii MAME emulator. Is Retroarch much better than it, at least for arcade games, like with compatibility?

I find recent retroarch builds an unstable pain in the a$$ process to use, due to crashes, but on last page or so there is a setup by retroaussie with playlists and the clips show it to be the ideal setup. You will have to go through last few pages of this thread to read up about it and how to get it but check the youtube clips, it's like a dream come true.

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed just reading the first post, let alone the last few pages. Is there any risk of bricking when messing around with getting this program to work?

Hi Retroaussie,

I have got your build version 2, it is amazing, great work and effort.

I notice it has FB Neo core but none of the playlists use it but rather use FB Alpha, anyway I can use Neo with this build?

I tried renaming neo to alpha and removing original fba alpha core but it returns to wii u menu. Thanks for any help.

Does anyone have any recommendations for YouTube tutorials on how to get Retroarch set up? This channel LibRetro seems to have several videos about it from just a few months ago, I've no idea if they leave out any important stuff though, like the stuff by Retroaussie people have been mentioning (I'm guessing that might be a little too advanced for me at this point).

Thanks, it took me several months to complete.
Firstly, why do you want to use FB NEO? FB Alpha 2012 performs very well (inc CPS3 runs smooth) and I did not see any benefit in FBNEO for now.
If you wish to change to FBNEO, you need to do the following;
1) Change the romset to match FBNEO, the romset on the build is for FBA 2012 only.
2) Change every game entry in the FB Alpha Playlist to point to FBNEO core
3) All the classics and collections playlists that use FBA2012 you need to also change every game entry in the Playlist to point to FBNEO core (eg PSIKYO, King of Fighters, Metal Slug Collections), I think from memory about 14 playlists use FBA2012

Very shortly I will be releasing Version 3 and it will include;
  1. 100% Artwork for all 26 Arcade Collections
  2. Improved Layout and tidy up of playlists
  3. 3 Hacks Systems will be added, NES, SNES & Mega Drive
  4. Artwork will be reduced by 70% as we will no longer need seperate artwork folders for the 26 Arcade Playlists, we can point to the 1 artwork folder, this will save 3-4GB and install will much faster with 25,000 less files
Cheers

Cheers for this amazing project.

Now my 3rd GBA Play option. Pretty impressive picture quality.
(The shaders workings elude me.. however, just seem to "fail to load")
(Having to rename my beloved ".sav" files to ".srm" isn't so much fun either... friggin customs)

Also huge shame that GBA link cable support and netplay isn't compatible, nor that a link split screen of some sort is implemented...
Maybe Retroarch will have it at some point ?

Not even gonna ask about N64 or PSX, as WiiSXR and the Wiis own VC work wonders already.

i never use my Wii U so i thought let me play with it a bit.

but i put the retroarch folder on the root of my sd card installed retroarch forwarder. but when ever i start it, it just loops and takes me to back to the Wii U menu. i did the media files too.

i have the latest nightly builds. is it the builds or what?

Fantastic work and I’m looking forward to the improvements. Is it possible to add a Sega CD and Mame playlist? There are lots of classics in Mame that are not in any of the available playlists.

I always had that issue trying to use a forwarder so I just use each emulator individually in the homebrew channel.

FB Neo runs some games better, eg no error on Kung Fu Master when going up ladders at end of stage and iirc games like robocop have better performance.

Either way this is still a solid build.

Thanks again mate
