Maybe a n00b question also late to the party, but Nvidia shield already has Android oreo so why bother with porting Android pie instead of oreo? As far as I know a GSI is available for android 8 so why isn't it being used instead on the switch?
My guess is that they're probably trying to use the latest version possible.
Also, if they ported and released Oreo first, they would have to also work on Pie. If they don't release Oreo, they only have to work on Pie. (At least that's what I think -- don't quote me on that.)

That is the thing, it is not possible to port android pie currently. We don't even know if Nvidia shield is going to get it. I don't think pie is so much better than oreo that anyone has to go through that extra headache to port it too (honestly I think most of what pie introduces is, like usual, aesthetics). Lots of high-end phones (spec-wise) have not gotten a pie firmware yet so I think most end users will be more than happy to get a fully working android oreo on the switch......

I mean Los pie, as we are both blocked on the same issue (NV haven't released framework patches we need yet)

I will likely sound retarded but here it goes

Los pie? You mean Lineage OS pie right? Yes, I am aware that lineage os does not have a stable P version for tegra x1 but also 14.1 seems to be compatible with Nvidia shield (I assume that includes tegra x1 GPU support?). 14.1 is Android 7 so a 2 (almost 3) downgrades from P, but theoretically if 14.1 works on nvidia shield , surely nougat can run on the switch?

Edit: Also if I am not wrong, pixel c (also running on tegra x1) has lineage os 15.1 support (which is oreo?). Doesn't that mean that nvidia released firmware patches for kernel versions 4.4 and 4.10? Although I can't seem to find them (honestly don't know where exactly to look for them)

No, gpu stack is incompatible with 4.9 kernel so need to wait

Unless they are able to reuse the L1 Widevine keys from the Shield TV, it will be either no Widevine (DRM video won’t work) or L3 (480p max DRM video)

Unofficial streaming apps will do HD just fine alongside anime streaming apps since those don’t have DRM atm.

It's Widevine L3.

It's Widevine L3.

That’s good to hear, at least that means streaming apps will work in the first place, I don’t see the 480p max limitation mattering as much on the Switch since it’s screen is only 720 but maybe someone can find a way to reuse the shield L1 keys since the Switch is a shield in the first place.

Any chance of having a Screen->Button Mapping Feature? Would help out a lot with those Games that do not have Controller Compatibility.
Games I will try to run -
Street Fighter IV (Requires Button Mapping)
Street Fighter IV - Champion Edition
GTA Games
Hill Climb Racing (Can Use Gamepad, but might require Button Mapping)
RetroArch for the later MAME Cores, and Dreamcast
DraStic
Doom Touch/other GZDoom Port (Has Keyboard Icon to Input Commands)

Probably something you're going to need to use an app for, if the joycons even get recognized in said app.

Well, I know the NVIDIA Shield Portable and the GPD XD/XD+ has a Button Mapping Feature. Hopefully the Dev will be looking into figuring that out. For those Devices, it requires a certain Button in order to run it. Maybe use the Screen Capture Button on the Joycon for that.
