PS1/2 can ps2 read an usb external hard drive?

Hello

I have just installed FMCB, OPL and another loader I don't remember the name.

Now I can load games from my 8gb USB, but the problem is installing them in my usb using USBExtreme.

Now the problem is that USBextreme can't read my 8gb device. What I did was format an external usb harddrive to FAT32, USBextreme found that 300gb device, I installed the game there and moved it to my 8gb device and it worked.

Still my ps2 can read the 300gb external hard drive. Is there any way to make it work? I don't want to buy an ethernet adapter and an extra hard drive, is there any way?

it will work, I can't remember how to do it but I used OPL when I did it. It's been so long...however, remember that PS2 used USB1.1 so speeds are VERY slow. Videos stutter and audio/video becomes out of sync. But, yes it is possible to use USB hard drive with PS2

Is the disk partitioned using the MBR partition table?

Even then, hardware compatibility isn't perfect (especially on USB 3 devices, a non-negligible number of which sucks at compatibility with USB 1 controllers), check if you can access it in wLaunchElf

is your external drive powered or have an Y-cable? the ps2 can't deliver enough power from a single usb port, you need a powered drive or an Y-cable to draw power from both ports.

No, when I go to mass: it finds nothing, I fear that if I buy new usb device I found 128gb and it will not recognize it. The only "safe" way is an HDD, but even if I buy an HDD I don't know what devices are compatible. I only found 1TB to 4TB on amazon

Huh you're thinking of the Wii U. I've used several different external hard drives on PS2 and never used a y-cable and it works fine. Y-cable won't improve anything such as speeds. The PS2 usb ports are 1.1 so you'll never get full speed although you can still get many games to work full speed.

I would format it again this time with MiniTool Partition wizard. Make sure there's only one partition and it's Fat32, Mbr and it's primary.

Huh you're thinking of the Wii U. I've used several different external hard drives on PS2 and never used a y-cable and it works fine. Y-cable won't improve anything such as speeds. The PS2 usb ports are 1.1 so you'll never get full speed although you can still get many games to work full speed.

the ps2 delivers 0.5 amps through usb, most hard drives need 1 amp.
I even have an external drive that needs more than that and only works if I connect the power only cord to a more reliable usb power source like an usb charger or the usb 3.0 port of my laptop (which can deliver up to 1.5 amps).

So I guess the 5 or so external hard drives I've used over the years and never used a y-cable that worked shouldn't have worked. Got it.

I've looking at one right now that's plugged in as I use the other port for my wireless lightgun and it works fine.

I said most, not every single one, there are exceptions for everything.
that and I have a fat ps2 (50001 model), maybe slims deliver more power.

Both Fats and Sims have the same 1.1 ports. Again I'm 5 for 5 so most likely most work without a y-cable and maybe there are a few like yours that need one. I've never heard of needing a y-cable but I'm taking your word for it although you're not taking mine.

usb 1.1 =/= same amperage.
the usb 1.1 and 2.0 standard states that an usb port must offer a maximum of 5 units, a unit being 100mA, so 500mA. most usb 1.1 device respected that specification, the ps2 (fat at least) being among them.
now, the usb standard doesn't say usb ports shouldn't be able to output more amperage than that, so manufacturers can make devices that output more than 5 units if they want.
the wii (and most usb 2.0 devices) is among those devices and its usb ports can deliver more than 5 units, so most usb drives work without problems, the wii u on the other hand follows the standard and only offers 500mA so external drives don't always work without external power or an Y-cable.

if you say that your ps2 can power your usb hard drives, I believe you. but my experience with a fat ps2 is not like that and is better to be on the safe side when offering help, so giving advice saying that is better to use a powered hard drive or an Y-cable is a good idea.

EDIT: IT WORKS! I formatted it to NTFS with minitool partition and then I formatted it to FAT32 with USBExtreme.

Now the last thing I need to do. I want to mount an HDD to my ps2 for max compability. If anyone can recommend me an HDD that will be very helpful

do you already have a network adapter?? there are sata adapters (beware of bad ones though) and ide to sata conversion kits that can make searching an hdd much more easier. try to get a 500gb or less hdd, winhiip doesn't like larger drives and is the best (and only?) tool to repair ps2 formatted drives in case of anything.

I myself have an official network adapter with a 200gb ide hdd I had lying around and I still can fit a good amount of games inside.

those look good.
the network adapter doesn't have an ethernet port though, but if it works as good as the reviews say it shouldn't be any problem, you'll just need to connect the hdd directly to your pc to install games which can be kind of a hassle, but not that big of a deal.
any brand of hard drive should do, so nothing to say here.

playstation hdd compatibility chart or list I think thats the one your looking for, all sony playstation reads Fat32 system format, but thats not the thing, even with a hdd that has a Fat32 format wont work, even you can use winhiip and install iso files its not going to work, try to look for the compatibility on the web.
Tips: try to install latest free mcboot for ps2, or jailbreak for ps3 application not all has a auto update you have to do it manually, like installing and delete the old ones.
