So up until now I have only installed .nsp files that were detected as CDN by the various tools. My reasoning was that if they come from CDN they are not modified and less likely to cause any trouble.

Recently I'm finding that most of the .nsp files are XCI conversions, and when looking harder I'm finding .nsp files that are NCA.

Am I been paranoid by searching only for CDN? are NCA files as safe/unmodified?

You never actually install .NSP files. You also don't mount .XCI files. In both cases, the point is to get access to the .NCA files tucked inside of them. They are packaged differently because the console is designed to read them differently. .XCI files are meant to be used as read-only live mounting while .NSP files are meant to be unpacked with a title installer such as DevMenu. .XCI and .NSP have a few other differences in their formats but games are just .NCA files. In fact, everything on the Switch are .NCA files.

It doesnt matter if it‘s an eshop nsp or a xci converted nsp.
If you‘re going online with installed nsp‘s you will be banned sooner or later ;)

Thanks

What is the difference then between

-an NSP that is detected as CDN
-an NSP that is detected as NCA

.NSP files that originate from the CDN is closer to a dump of a game than if its just a converted .XCI file. But legitimate .NSP files are titlekey encrypted so they need a fake ticket to be installed in order to be used which can lead to a ban but aren't used in .XCI converts making the latter safer.
