Hello I have just bought a nice 3DS-XL and unfortunately the system version is 11.6. Is it safe to update to 11.9 in order to use online features? i have watched a video on how to backup sys through Godmode9 and thats what i will do before update. Is there anything more i should worry about or am i good to go? im a newbie when it comes to this platform and mods but i am fast learner. So what do u say?

If you follow 3ds.guide and install b9s and luma, then you can update to your heart's content

Don't follow a video guide, follow the one I linked you to

Video guides are quickly outdated and dangerous

Oh, in that case, go ahead and update

That sounds perfectly reasonable and should work out just fine

You can tick show nand or user string in system settings, if you want

You don't need to tick any of them (do you have an emunand? Most people don't use that anymore)

And I always plug my system in during update just to be safe

The guide tells you what to to there
Just select show Nand or user... And then press start

Phew i forgot to do backup via godmode and updated the console successfuly luckyly im now on11.9 42E YEEE
Honestly, some may chide me for saying this

But if you have b9s, nand backups aren't super important, because it's pretty easy to recover with a ctr transfer if you really needed it

I will advise that this is not sound advice. The reason for backing up your SysNAND *.bin image is that there are softbricks that CTRTransfer can't fix, especially:
  • (software based) Bootrom 8046 Blue Screens of Death
  • Mismatching NSCD header due to franken firmware from failed A9LH 2.1.0 downgrade.
  • Permanently lost or deleted personal NAND files like HWCAL[0|1].DAt, SecureInfo_A/B, LocalFriendCodeSeed_A/B, movable.sed, certs.db. (Crappy LCD displays calibrations, Nintendo online service bans, and certification failures for tickets / installing CIAs / verifying online identify / etc.)
    • These are console unique files where it's better to keep your original copies. If you're coming from older CFW where your CTRNAND was trashed and before GodMode9 was created, you have no backup essential.exefs to fall back on. This brick requires Lazarus3DS and borrowing donor (private) CTRTransfer image.
