...you can now hack a slim PS3 without having to flash the FW down to 3.55/3.20? Or make sure you have the right model of PS3? Or any other limitations? I remember seeing a video of someone using an exploit with the PS3's Internet Browser and running code to put it into CFW to allow the installation of Multiman...or something like that (the video in question had Catherine in the thumbnail).

ps3s that were unhackable can now have a tethered jailbreak that has less options than the ps3s that always were hackable, so I would personally still make sure you have the right model of PS3.

But you don't need to open the PS3 up anymore & a lot of people are happy with their tethered jailbreak (my ps3 gets more action with movian than games these days though, which requires the fully hackable ps3s)

It's tethered? How? From what I remember of the video, you just load up some website, select a few options from some drop down menus, and boom, your slim PS3 is hacked is the vague recollection of what I watched.

Then again, I could scour eBay for the right model of PS3, I suppose.

Right, you trigger the exploit using a web page then depending on what type of PS3 you have you can either:

1. Install CFW (like Rebug), this will then be untethered & you can do anything.

2. Use HAN, which allows you to install PSN games to the hard drive like you bought them, no ps3 homebrew works though. You have to redo the exploit every time you boot the console. There is a hack that allows the exploit to be installed into a book mark so you don't technically need to be tethered, but I don't know if that has been updated for the latest version of HAN and you still need to go into the browser anyway.

I have one, but it's one of those ugly, large, and ultimately intrusive FAT ones. It has BC for PS2, but the fan noise (and I know why that is, and it's for a reason that makes me wish I had the stability of the slim PS3s as opposed to the made-to-fail FAT ones) almost doesn't make it worth it in addition to the PS2 games not looking any better than they did on the actual system, which makes them look blurry on modern TVs.

Yeah, HAN! That's what it was. It looks like it also works on the Super Slim models as well which...ehhhh...*looks at HDD sizes and how "meh" a lot of people tend to view those models and also remembers their hackability being even more limited than the slims...*

From what I remember, Fat PS3s lasted longer than Fat 360s, but were still doomed to get the YLOD. For a console that costed $599 back in the day! Anyways, I think it had something to do with Sony either not putting enough thermal compound on the Fat PS3s, or the additional heat generated from the SOC that the PS2 games ran off of in the launch models (it was either this and/or it was costing Sony too much money for the SOC to be worth it), or that the fan was insufficient or something. All I remember was that I think it had something to with cooling the PS3 because it reminded me of one of the basics of building a PC, which include making sure your components are sufficiently cooled off and not get fried!

But that's another story/thought for another time.

the problem with both systems is non-lead thermal paste. it's to accommodate green laws, which are meant to help the environment. you can replace that paste with lead-based if you want. if the system does get ylod, you'll need to do a reball, which costs around $80. only people with the correct equipment can do this.

The problem is normally the die connection to the substrate, rather than the balls between the substrate and motherboard.

If it works for a while and shortly fails again then it was just heating the chip, rather than reballing, that made it work.

Nvidia went through a terrible time, it affected desktops & laptops as well. You can mitigate it by keeping the temperature constant, a lot of laptops were letting the temperature get really high and then kick the fans on full until it cooled down and then turned off. This was changed to keeping fans on most of the time, which really annoyed a lot of laptop owners.

Yeah it sucks that consoles are considered kids toys and because of that can't use leaded solder. Before the ps3 era it wasn't considered a kids toy and all consoles before that contain leaded solder. I have a couple modded ps3's. One fat that i bought back in the day i had reballed with leaded solder. Didn't die on me or anything but did it as a precaution since all fats eventually die and like the look a lot more of the fat ps3.
