Hardware 1tb micro sd cards are now a thing

To think I recall a time on this site* when 1 gig was an extravagance and 2 gigs more or less just theoretical (and not too long after that the domain of high end photographers or people with serious needs for such storage). Got to get that Japanese Kingston.

*I can go back much before that when 16 megs was something special but that means less around here.

Hopefully the now lower end ones get knocked down a bit. I mean if the vendors feel like getting rid of some old stock I am sure I can find a use for some 256gig devices.

I got lucky like 2 weeks ago, Amazon was having a sale on the San disk 400gb ones. I ended up getting one for $79.99 plus tax.

Edit: Lol actually right now they are even cheaper, their going for $77.90 and free shipping.

It’s too expensive right now. If it doesn’t sell well, the price should drop. These days 1tb isn’t enough memory depending on what you need it for. Forget thinking about things like the switch. I don’t even have 1tb of photos and videos, so at the moment I don’t see this as something worth getting. Remember 1tb is really going to be like 980GB or whatever memory it’s going to really start with.

It's cool, but they aren't going to sell any at that price. On sale you can get 128GB mSDs for $10, so that's over 1TB for $90. True, that's nine mSDs you have to keep track of instead of one, but they can all fit in one tiny case anyway.

There's always a need at the top end for bigger storage capacities on a single device. These high end cards aren't aimed at the average Switch or smartphone user. As the technology matures the prices will drop and they'll become more viable for the average user.

It's the same thing that happened when 512Gb first came out, 256Gb, 128Gb, 64Gb, 32Gb....64Mb, 32Mb, 16Mb...

And you always get the same stupid comments every time; "nobody needs that much storage" and "nobody is ever going to pay that much"

Just have a search on here for launch threads for previous breakthrough capacities' launches; they all contain exactly the same shit.

I didn't mean they'll literally sell zero, but I don't expect them to sell very many. Whether you're a bleeding-edge tech enthusiast or not, it doesn't change the fact that you know the prices of these will always decrease over time, and also with the release of higher capacities. There is a sucker born every minute, though, and a sucker you'd have to be to jump on the initial retail price of this.

Sheesh. While I am not as old as FAST, I remember standing in a RadioShack my senior year of high school looking at 4GB micro SD cards with their fancy new SDHC compression format. My little OG R4 couldn't use one, but all the same I balked at the $100 pricetag. I thought, man if I could get my hands on one of those and a CycloDS... I would be so freaking set. Think of all the games AND music AND movies I could put on there!

What Pleng said and it not even all that uncommon. Get someone into their photography or videography and that can be snapped up easy and written off as an expense and a bargain at twice the price. Various aspects of sensor data grabbing, backups... $450 per user with a form factor like this is a steal.

If I am charging £1000 a day for a project then that is nothing... might even be petty cash range.

Only on exfat, fat32 has no issues whatsoever

I think it would be quiet easy to fill up a 1tb micro sd with how popular the switch is becoming. I have a 400gb one at the moment and it only has 30 games on it taking up 127.97gb. I initially had a 128gb card thinking that was plenty, but soon needed to upgrade to 400gb. Who really buys physical copies anymore? My son is an avid gamer and loves playing the switch, before I knew it one thing led to the next and all the sudden we own 30 games. Only 6 of those games I got for myself to play. I know it sounds like quite a bit of games but for an 11 year old kid whose heavily into the digital/internet era right now its fine with me. LOL and I know what you all are thinking, but yes he does have a life outside of electronics and video games. Gaming is just a big hobby of his at this stage of his life.

Yeah but for concentration and dedication purposes it's better to indulge in a few than switch from one game to the other. It takes the interest out of the thing pretty fast

I totally agree, every time he gets going on it with friends they switch games every 20 or 30 mins. I don't know how it can be so fun doing that way. The longest I've ever seen him on the same game was like 2 hours and it was rocket league.

homebrew on 7.0.x is still alittle too new to be stable but anything on 6.2 is ok but there nothing wrong being on 7.0.x just some things need to be updated

I would only splurge on 2tb card since its the max size the switch can allow. but because this 1tb exist means the smaller sd cards will become cheaper and the 1tb will go on sale i.e. black friday
