I apologize if this is covered somewhere else, but I have done a lot of looking around and nothing really seems to fit my exact issue.

I have a WD My Passport that I have plugged into the Wii U with a Y-cable. This worked perfectly on my old Wii (using Wiiflow). I followed the "definitive vWii Hacking Guide" exactly. I'd say about 66% of the time, when USB Loader GX hits the "initialize usb device", it freezes. The other 34% it works just fine. I've tried setting the IOS to 58, but that doesn't seem to have any effect on my results. I tried plugging the HD into a hug for external power, but the system couldn't detect the drive at all.

The only way I can consistently get in without the freezing is to plug in the HD while it is "waiting for HDD".

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

it's a wiiu issue, not a hdd.
wiiu are just not the best for hdd detection.

if even IOS58 isn't helping, you can try another device, but usually WD element/passport are one of the best to use for wii/wiiu.

I can't really help, if IOS58 doesn't fix your problem there's not much you can do.
you can launch wiiflow, exit, launch usbloaderGX.
or maybe put the boot.dol on usb, don't use the forwarder, and force hbc to init the drive by displaying the homebrew on hdd.
