Is there any homebrew app/mod that allows the vWii side of things to output in 480p automatically irrespective of the Wii U setting? Just tried it out on a whim and my TV upscales far better than the Wii U does internally as it renders a much better image with far less jaggies. Changing it back and forth is no biggie but it would be nice to have it done automatically allowing the Wii U 1080p output and the vWii in 480p.

Thanks

No, it doesn't exist, and frankly I'm not sure of the most reasonable way to implement one (maybe editing the Vwii and enhanced Vwii loaders to not read the video mode from the actual WiiU settings file, when converting it to Wii format?)

Thank you, it would be most appreciated if such a mod were possible because switching back and forth manually is quite cumbersome. Surprised no one looked into this yet as the Wii Us upscaler is terrible.

Is setting the wii u to 480P useful? It seems as silly as having that same option on switch. Why would you need that for something using HDMI? Clearly people are using a HDTV.

The WiiU also has the standard Wii video socket (and if it didn't have one, someone is going to try some 480 to composite China special product)

Very much so if you play Wii titles.

I only tried it out recently just to see what it was like as I wasn't expecting much but when the Wii U is set to 480p it outputs a much cleaner signal to the TV which then upscales it in a far more superior way than the Wii U did internally as the end result is a picture that looks pretty darn awesome as it has far less of that odd combination of jaggies/blur that the Wii U introduces as it mashes pixels to do its thing.

Highly recommend everyone try it and see the difference for themselves because its literally day and night when the TV handles a 480p input compared to a prescaled 480p>1080p but the only issue is its cumbersome to have to keep switching it back to 1080p for the Wii U, which is why I made the thread.

Just tried it and it does make a massive difference. Checked wii sports and wii sports resort. Probably as good if not better than actual wii on component cables. Resident evil 4 should look much better aswell, will check when get more time.

Such a simple thing but never occurred to me to try before.

Cheers OP.

keep the system at 720p, so that the tv upscale to 1080p removing the jaggies and most wii u games are 720p anyway.

I kept my wii at 720p until I tried this 480p for wii. I'm gonna keep switching as like OP says, the difference is day and night in wii games. I.e. 720p looks horrid on wii and 480p looks good.

interesting i will try this later as i use a HD projector .. i will see clearly ... ( i dont think it looks to bad atm ) .. but it definately worth a try .. !

Please report back with your findings. I didn't think the upscale looked too bad either until I switched it to 480p at which point the artifacts and general crappiness became so obvious. Darn these rose tinted memories of an OG Wii on CRT!

Doesn't work that way because the artifacts are introduced by the Wii Us crappy upscaler so doing anything to the 480p signal degrades it more than helps it whereas pulling the pure image out and letting the TV do its thing makes it look great. Check for yourself and you'll see the difference between 720p/1080p is negligible at best for vWii but 480p makes it shine.

No probs man, the difference is so huge isn't it? The Wii graphics look the best they ever have (even better than my CRT memories) as its all so crisp without being uber pixelated and the colours really pop nicely with no bleed. Try Super Mario Galaxy 2, it looks beautiful.

Now hopefully someone will come up with a mod that autoswitches the vWii across to 480p as its quite time intensive having to go to the Wii U settings each time to change it over. Don't have time to check at the moment but found this when I was searching:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/settings-editor-gui.310091/

And thought it might help even though its for the OG Wii.

Anyone else tried it out yet? If so what did you think?

Yeh its a massive difference. I posted about this on gamefaqs and don't thik anyone else has tried it yet.

If vwii is able to auto switch to 480p that would be awesome, alas I know nothing about programming.

Thats interesting, I was wondering how the projector would upscale - does it even have an upscaler? The Wii U uses nearest neighbour scaling which is crap whereas most TV render it much better due to having vastly improved hardware to process the 480p image.

Thanks for trying it out and letting us know though.

im really unsure if it upscales anything i would think so .... PS4 Pro & All the other Consoles .360 Deamcast all look awesome in 1080p .... very Crisp ...as for WIIU looks perfect ... vWii well its WII1 ..so i expect it to look oldskool .... but still fine .. i bought a J PING .projector screen and it really doubles the brightness and colors massively ..( Best thing i bought for my projector ... was using a white sheet before .....) i would highly recommend for any one to buy one $30 from Amazon if they use a HD projector ....

Anymore information on whether anyone developed a patch for this?

I currently like to play vWii games through my Xbox One's HDMI input port, (for various reasons) although when I do this, the image turns green.

If I boot up vWii mode while the WiiU's resolution is set to 720p, or 1080p, the screen will turn green. But if I change the WiiU to 480p, and then boot up vWii mode, the image displays as it should.

One of the reasons I read for why this is happens, is that vWii mode auto switches to 480i, rather than 480p, when the WiiU's resolution is set to 720p or higher. But if the WiiU is set to 480p, then vWii mode will stay at 480p since there's no need for the resolution to change.

It's important to note that the green screen issue only happens when I try to pass through the Xbox's HDMI input port. This is because the Xbox's HDMi input port doesn't recognize 480i through HDMI.

Anyone know of a way to get the vWii to lock at 480p, regardless of which resolution the WiiU is set to by default?

From what I've gathered, it's not that the WiiU has a crappy upscaler, it's that when the WiiU is set to 720p, or 1080p, the vWii defaults down to 480i mode. This 480i default is what's causing the vWii image to look horrible.

It appears that only when you change the WiiU to 480p does the vWii default to 480p output.

It's unfortunate, because although it makes your Wii and GameCube titles look fantastic, WiiU titles in 480p look pretty bad.

I'm hoping someone eventually finds a way to lock vWii 480p regardless of which WiiU resolution has been chosen.
