So normally when you play locally with switch mario kart 8.
When you play with 2 people you are able to use 2 joycon sets connected together with the controller pad thingy.

So 2 people can play with a real like controller.

Now for some reason when creating a local room when someone brings a 2nd switch. Suddenly only SINGLE joycons are allowed for controllers.
The dual Joycon way of controlling for one player each is removed...

Does anyone know why and if there is something you can do?

It's a case where only 2 controllers total are allowed per system. Each joy con counting as one. It's a similar pain in smash but all the time because if you want to do 8 player each player has to use a gc controller, pro controller, or a single joy con because a pair of joy cons would take up 2 of the 8 slots.

As to fixing the issue either remember the straps or have pro controllers on hand.

Eh? you say 2 controllers total allowed per system but techincally they are 2 controllers since they are connected as one.
You mean only 2 joycons. as to "controllers"

remember the straps? and no we all have no pro controllers.. zzz they cost a fortune.

Each joy con counts as 1 controller wether they are a pair or not. Also, when I say the straps I mean the wrist straps. They make the joy cons sl and sr buttons acceptable to where the single joy cons aren't that bad.

It's because each device (one JoyCon being one device) has to be connected to the Switch obviously.
You can use two JoyCons as one controller but it's still two Bluetooth connections for the Switch.
I think that limitation is because otherwise there would be too many BT devices in a local multiplayer game causing unexpected behavior.

I see. that sounds like it would the reason...
So.. that sux really.. They give us these addons to make it a controller. then it doesnt work in multiplayer.. pfft.
